Cool fuel or fire

hey im new to this site but it seems its where i want to be. i recently bought a 79 chevy with a 6 inch lift it has a edelbrock 600 carb with a torker2 intake mounted on a 350 when i got it i had to put on the carb it has a electric choke that i wired to a switched 12volt source before i wired it up it took forever for it to start. but when it finally did it ran great then i shut it off and it wouldnt start again. since then i tried to start it but no luck. even after i wired it up still nothing so anyway no go with or without the choke i took out a spark plug and it has fire but the plugs wet i dont smell gas like i would if it was flooded im a small engin mech. so this is all new to me can anybody tell me what to do next i even tried starting fluid but got nothing not even a backfire i took the carb off this morning and cleaned it inside and out

Re: fuel or fire

You said you have spark, and the plug is wet but it doesn't smell like gas? Is there something in the tank other than gas? Does it have gas? You need air, fuel, spark and timing. Sounds like you have air and spark, if you didn't move the distributor the timing should be there. Seems like a fuel issue.

Re: fuel or fire

hello ,welcome
may want to check fuel filters/lines for cracks
last fall i replaced my fuel pump and removed the "pipe" from the pump to the carb filter
found rusty lookin dirt in there ,seemed to help me
also where is the 12 vdc power from, needs good power
do you pump before cranking and during?

Re: fuel or fire

hey there thanx for the reply no there is no cracks anywhere, ive tryed pumping, not pumping, during, before, and even after but no go the heater motor is gone so i hooked the 12volt power to that and it does give a solid 12volts for the choke.the filter is see through, the gas looks clean it seems like its flooded but i dont see how it can be.
