noisy ls truck power steering pump question
Due to clearance issues I had to put a smaller pulley on my power steering pump and now that it's runing and driving around I don't know if I have a bad pump or if it just noisy from over driving the pump now as I never heard the motor running before I got it, it went from the stock 6" something to a 5" pulley, other that that it seems to steer fine just sounds like I have a blower whining ..any thoughts thanks.

Re: noisy ls truck power steering pump question
Make sure its full of fluid. A.one inch change in pulleys wont make it noisy. Sounds like air in the system, is the fluid foamy? Make sure all the lines and fittings are tight, they say it's possible for a sitting to be able to suck in air, but not leak fluid, although I have never actually seen it myself.

Re: noisy ls truck power steering pump question
Everything seems tight, I had the pump off before it was started and it was completely empty before I refilled it and started the truck, I've checked it hot and cold and it says it was full, I don't know how much sits in the steering box but it already looks pretty dirty, I didn't pay attention to if it was foaming up, ill start it tonight and try looking at it while its running,

Re: noisy ls truck power steering pump question
You're not alone, i just fired up my 6.0 for the first time this last week in my '85, and its whining like yours. Doesn't do it when its idling, but when i give it some rpm's, or apply the brakes (i have hydro boost), sounds like i have a blower. I did find that i forgot to put a clamp on one of my return lines and was leaking fluid. But my level is good and the applied clamp didn't change anything.

Re: noisy ls truck power steering pump question
Are you bleeding these with the cap on or off? Seems like a silly question. However, I've seen people trying to do it with the cap on.

Re: noisy ls truck power steering pump question
I did, I had the wheels up, and running and turning it side to side, I got it to quiet down a little but after driving awhile it comes back, I'm going to try again tonight but try not to hit the locks as i read that can add air? Who knows its running and driving now so there's bound to be something.

Re: noisy ls truck power steering pump question
I would also try to avoid going full lock. When I bled mine, I had the truck OFF, went back and forth a few times..then topped it off. Put the cap on, and waited a few weeks while I finished another step on my build. Came back, had it on the ground with the truck on, and went side to side with the cap OFF. Topped off final time, no problems.

Re: noisy ls truck power steering pump question
Got a donor pump from a friend off of a duramax. Fixed the problem and she's running quiet now. I did change the pressure hose to the Hydro boost since it had a very tiny drip. Anyhow, i did find that the hard tubing (pressure/discharge) coming off the old pump was smashed down quiet a bit. So that could have been the problem to why it was howling.
