Doors won't close with new weatherstripping
Is this typical? I have about another 3/4" before the door will fully close. The gaps are fine, everything is good but the weatherstripping is in the way. Did anyone here trim on the trailing edge of the door?
Jeff

Re: Doors won't close with new weatherstripping
I am pretty sure that this has been addressed in some build threads, but I'm sorry I can't point you to the right place. From what I remember reading, some of the OEM type replacement weather stripping causes this probelm. There are some other venders out there that have a slightly different profile weather strip that works much better on these trucks. Again I can't point you to the product or which vender, but be patient and I'm sure that others will be able to jump in here with a fix for you.

Re: Doors won't close with new weatherstripping
I just did this today on my 56. The door shuts fine but I do have to shut it a little harder. You can actually put it on backwardsand the fit will be all wrong. The lip needs to aim away from the door, not lay up against it flush. Yes, you have to trim the ends where they overlap at the bottom, but try to make it a hair long and push it together and glue the loose spots between clips with weatherstrip adhesive. Don't neglect the weatherstrip retainer at the bottom either. Classic Parts sells a stainless set that won't rust away like the originals. To attach it I threw threw the regular metal screws away and used stainless self tapping screws. (my door bottoms are patch panels and didn't have holes.)

Re: Doors won't close with new weatherstripping
Well, heck. I originally ordered these through one of the major truck suppliers but they were on backorder for MONTHS so I cancelled the order and found these on ebay. They're called "MetroSeals. Much thicker than the pic above I think. You can't even come close to shutting the door.
Maybe I should try a different brand?

Re: Doors won't close with new weatherstripping
Maybe you do. I believe my seals came from either LMC or Classic Parts. The label on the bag says they are made by a company called CounterPart. They claim to fit not just tri five trucks but tri five cars and late 50's early 60's GM cars as well.

Re: Doors won't close with new weatherstripping
steel rubber is the best, lmc truck or brothers sells good stuff too.
new rubber makes the doors close hard, but yours looks a little too big.

Re: Doors won't close with new weatherstripping
I installed the Sofseals in my 51 and as good a quality as they are, I still used an knife to trim so the doors would close properly! It seems to be a crap shoot with your door gap before one starts...??!!?

Re: Doors won't close with new weatherstripping
Before buying new ones take them off and try them on backwards, they may just seal if they are thick.
