motor question??? not sure

Alright guys I bought a 66 C10 Stepside and it did not run at the time because the starter was fried. Well the guy that sold it to me said it had a 327 bored .40 over. So got it home and pulled the starter, and took it down discount auto and the guy looked up the pictures of the mouth of the starter and said to me are you sure it is a 327 .... I was like I think so. What happen then was, we had to go threw every starter in the system till we came across a 283 starter that matched up perfect. So I guess I have a 283 which does not bother me because it runs now. But is it possible that the motor is a 327 ???? I am pretty much clueless when it comes to knowing anything about motors but I can fix everything with ease. How can I find out more info n the motor?

What numbers are on the block? That is an easy way to find out what you have.

your starter bolt to the bell-housing or the block? early engs bolted to the B/H and yes your eng could be a 327. casting # on the back of the eng drivers side where B/H bolts to eng. also a pad on the front P/Side of eng should have some # & leters. post them up.

^ hope that's clear enough? both numbers should be visible without taking apart the engine; we're just doing a rebuild.

The 283, 307, 327 and 350 use the same starter in the '63-'72 trucks.

Good news got the motor number

3970014 - 350ci (1970-1976 year) - so it's neither a 283 nor a 327. sorry, i guess - the upside is easier to find parts for it.

3970814 doesn't exist, so that's a zero, not an eight, or any other number, according to our book there's nothing else that ends in 14.


I forgot to tell you; the 2nd set of numbers are under the alternator; pull that off / move it to the side.. and you should see it pretty clearly. it'll give you more info too. Like where it was manufactured & what type of car it came out of.

We're learning as we go tearing down & rebuilding this motor.

cool thanks everyone I guess its a done deal, ITS a 350 with a loud engine knock and a transmission that won't go into gear man.... I need to make friends that know how to work on this stuff. PS working in a Air force parking lot at base housing sucks!!!!!

Terry (my bf) knows alot of military-bases have a shop that can be used for a charge; a DIY type shop. If you don't already know where it is on your base, he said it should be listed under recreational or community services... hope that helps a bit.

if the eng has been rebuilt it could be a 327 if they used a 327 large journal crank and 327 pistons.

Regardless, its not what the p/o said it was (bored out 327)..

If/when you tebuild the block you can pull the numbers off the cam, heads and intake for information. Our truck had a 283 2-barrel intake siliconed to death onto the 400 block. Ya never know what these trucks go thru over their relatively long lives.
