Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
Nice truck, you very seldom see one with the license plate bracket on rear. Mine is missing and I'm wondering does it bolt to bumper and strip below tailgate?

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
It bolts directly to the bumper, but it is pretty rusty. I may have to fabricate a new one. There are two panels that bolt to the rear bumper frame that are rusted out pretty bad too. I guess they are filler panels. Should be real easy to make them, I bet they are not reproduced.

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
wow, you stole that - I wouldn't blink twice at $1K on that truck - GOOD deal. I like your plans. Since we all love to plan OTHER people's projects - here's my 2 cents:
1. I'd do everything you said you'd like to do to it!! Then.... 2. 5/7 drop (or leave it stock) 3. CLR the whole darn thing 4. Leave the interior just like it is, it looks sweet. 5. Fresh white on the roof and in the side trim 6. Call it a day. I love these old trucks that are heavily optioned and trimmed and are all original with relatively solid body panels. Sure you need some rockers maybe, but so what - that is one way cool truck. |

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
I got the motor, transmission and front front suspension removed. I have cleaned up the bellhousing and transmission and have it ready to paint. Can someone tell what color these were from the factory? I have a manual 3 speed and it looked like the original color on the bellhousing is a green and had the number 53 painted on it. The transmission had no paint at all.

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
I disassembled the 3 speed transmission and it looks pretty good. I need to know how to get the shaft out the holds in the cluster gear. If you have to press it out does it matter which direction to press it? I do not see any clips holding it in. I'm sure that it is not a Saginaw. I did not see very much information on the site about rebuilding these.

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
Ok, my 3 speed transmission is totally apart, cleaned and ready to put back together. I need a diagram and a good supplier for a rebuild kit. What color should the bellhousing and transmission be painted or does it matter? Thanks for all the help. It is a gm 4 bolt.

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
I ordered and received the Yellow Assembly Manual and I am pretty disappointed with quality and information in it. Is there a better manual out there that is specifically for 1966 C10 that has a breakdown of all the parts?

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
First of all, welcome, and awesome find! Sweet looking 66, and great price too. I just picked my 66 up at the beginning of March this year. Paid a lot more than that, but I am road worthy. I would love to see that 6 cylinder restored under the hood with a 5 speed, that would be sweet! Love the original valve cover!

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
I too ordered this manual, and am equally as disappointed with it.

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
My 61 fleetside parts truck has one, I have one on me stepside also. They had two different mounts. One mounted on the bumper, the other on the back of the fender or the panel under the tailgate.

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
It has been a while since I have posted but I have been doing a lot of work on the cab. Mostly replacing rusted out metal. It has been so hot that it makes it diffucult to work very long. Here are some pics.

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
I need a little help from the 3 speed transmission experts out there. First - is there a manual out there for this Muncie 318? I found one diagram on line and it's so blurry when you enlarge it you can't see it anything. The other is this, when putting it back together I install the reverse idler shaft but it is lose in the housing. Is there a pin or something that is suppose to hold it from coming out of the housing. I had to drive it out and there was no pin. It looks like the housing holds it in place at both ends. Like I said, you can push the shaft with you hand and it will fall out of the front housing. I really want to get this thing buttoned back up so any help would be appreciated.

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
It's been a while but I am back to work on the project. I removed the 12 bolt rear end, tore it completely apart. Took the housing down to bare metal, welded in the axle tubes and grinded down all the imperfections when it was cast. I have one issue and that is removing the pinion the gear shaft out of the housing. I removed the nut and used a puller to get the yoke off. The pinion gear shaft will not drop out of the housing. I put the nut back on it and put a 2x4 on top and smacked it several time with a hammer but it will not move. Any suggestion? I have some pics coming soon. I also sandblasted my trailing arms and then boxed them in. They turned out good. It took a lot of welding and grinding.

Re: 1966 C10 Fleetside Project
I still can't get the pinion shaft out of the housing. I'm going to take my die grinder and try to cut the bearing race next to the shaft. Here are some pices of my boxed trailing arms and I added exhaust cut outs in the middle crossmember. The frame is going this weekend to the sand blaster.
