Truck on Ebay
1960 C10 that looks to have been #7 for that body coming off the line. This would be cool to own and wish it were closer to me so I could look!

Re: Truck on Ebay
to me two things dont look good!! 1) the stamp on the frame looks to be welded on, you can see welding marks across the top! and 2) you cant see if the rivets have been replace on the bady tag!!

Re: Truck on Ebay
Interesting catch! Only wish I was in the area to take a look and see what other issues exist.

It looks like the oil was wiped on just over the top rail to disguise the possible weld in stamp.

Re: Truck on Ebay
I just looked at my 60 and it appears identical, the frame is fully boxed in that area the weld you are seeing joins the inner and outter frame rails together. To me that frame stamp looks right for the 1960-1962 Frame.

Re: Truck on Ebay
Looks like we got sidetracked on the real issue here. Number seven from 1960 is pretty cool. It was no doubt made in the first hour on the first day of production for our line of trucks. Now if it were six trucks earlier, then ....

Re: Truck on Ebay
yeah OEM that is pretty cool, almost thinking of making a bid even though my wife would kill me. For all we know this may be the earliest 60 in existence not hard to believe that 1-6 may be long gone, some may have been prototypes that were destroyed etc. It would be cool to have lucky #7

Re: Truck on Ebay
So who's going to buy it??? I wish it were closer so I could see how much rust or other damage exist. My wife would kill me too as I have three trucks already!

Re: Truck on Ebay
No sale at $810. ....hmmm... I wonder what the earliest known truck in/of any generation is. It seems truck clubs don't have the nut-job statisticians like other models do (corvettes, novas, chevelles, etc.) I'm betting no-one has ever done a consensus on surviving truck production before. This truck could be (as 60_project pointed out) the earliest 1960 known. Maybe, maybe not.
If it were a Corvette, it could be worth a substantial amount more than one from say, a month later, regardless of it's condition. Interesting nonetheless. Oh well, it's just a beat up truck, right? |

Re: Truck on Ebay
In case the truck gets sold and the ad disappears, I figured I'd post a couple pics for those who might come across this thread and missed it.

Re: Truck on Ebay
It says in my book that the number begins at 100001 at each assembly plant, that means there is a number 7 from each of the plants made.

As far as the starting number, there are exceptions, for example: during the "square body" era GMC trucks started at 500001. My latest program started the saleable preproduction builds at 100001 but the regular production cars started at 000001. FWIW K

Just to finish my thought: That is correct, but there will still be a unique VIN for each vehicle produced because it will discriminate based on the plant identifier. Some of you probably know that, for certain year Pontiac cars, you can send the VIN into Pontiac Historic Services and they will send you the build information for that car. I was investigating a particular car, so I requested the information for a '65 GTO VIN 237375P115814 (Pontiac Michigan built). After the information arrived I looked it over and it totally did not make sense. Option content in the information didn't match what was present on the car, etc. It didn't even come back as a GTO (...that's bad. Sometimes very bad). I thought maybe it had been stolen at some point and the VIN swapped - and I told the seller that. Finally I realized they had sent the information for 237375Z115814 (Fremont California built car). Took me about a year to realize it. I let PHS know and they sent me the information for the right car. Suddenly everything started to makes sense once again...
