Painless wiring

Anybody running a kit? Im having serious problems with stuff shorting out. Had a small fire tonight. I see that there is a GM kit from painless, but it looks pretty expensive and some of the other kits are like half the cost. Just wanting to see what my options are.

I went with an EZ wiring kit. It is a universal kit, but I thought it was put together well and it was affordable. I think I spent about $125 on the kit.

Did the kit send have the ignition/alt wire that comes down to the starter? or to battery?

Yes, it came with the necessary wires for a 1-wire alternator or the late model style with plug. On mine, I ran the alternator wire to the starter post.

Sounds better than a Painful kit...I just finished one and the 10205 (I think that's the number) is basically a chassis kit that you need to use your old wiring for the headlights, power windows & power locks, gas tank / fuel selector valves etc etc and it is NOT specific to that truck.

I think what Painless did was just run as many vehicles under one kit and when you order the kit they slap the "correct" application number sticker on the box.

I called them for help and they told me that they 'designed' the C10 kit for people that just need the basics for wiring a hunting or mudding truck.

I'll NEVER buy any of their products again.

That EZ wiring is a universal kit, and is not specific to the C10, but I found it to work well for the price and for what I got was a good deal.

I am kind of surprised to hear that about the Painless. THey are known to be a good kit, etc..

Speedwaymotors also has some inexpensive "universal" kits. I bought one for my C10 for about $100. I haven't installed it yet but it looks to be a solid kit.

I am interested in a kit that fits the existing fuse block hole. painless is the only one I have seen and I thought it was up near $800 for everything. is there another kit that fits the same. I think the universal kits you have to block the old hole and cut a new one. is that right?

The universal kit does not use the factory fuse block hole in the firewall. You would have to plug or cap off and run a hole through the cap or a secondary hole.

I bought the painless kit for 73-87 pickups from summit for $500. It is a good kit but there is some thinking involved to install it, don't think you're just going to plug it in. You have to reuse you're A/C wiring, Dual Tank wiring, and I'm sure I forgot something else. I wouldn't buy another one, I would go to a junk yard and try and find a harness that hasn't been cut up, I've actually seen quite a few. Or just make one, the wiring in these is not complicated enough.

P.S. if you have an 80s truck the A/C and heater wiring is all ready to go, but if not you have to reuse it and take all the other wiring out of the fuse block. Its a PITA I think, kinda wish they would have told me that part.

Well I got most of the kit installed. Stuck on a few things thats all. of course. I didn't get emailed with all the other replies. so i missed that part about the AC/Heater AND OF COURSE i'm stuck on that. also stuck on the window washer/wiper switch And i'm a little rough on the headlight switch, but i'll take a look at that again tomorrow.

Also, did you guys run a saftey switch on the ignition wire that runs to the starter?

And i'm completely lost on how to wire up my dual tanks.

I'm really happy with the EZ kit so far.

Just a few months ago my brother and I installed our first engine wire harness and light harness kit and I talked to a bunch of people on here and had no issue. I went with Americanautowire.com They were awesome and affordable with next to none thinking made right for what you have. Plus they have support as well and the people are knowledgable! Check it out. My truck almost burnt due to a short and I was at work. Been running mine now for 3 months or longer with the new harness and Im good.
