thinking about buying, need some questions answered.

I am looking at buying this truck, as a parts truck/ winter truck.

http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/cto/2990862228.html

The problem is that it doesn't really run well. I need to know what the possible problems are that would cause it to idle ok , kinda, but nothing else. I looked at the fuel filter and couldn't notice any fuel moving through it. It would kinda idle but kinda wanted to die, if you tried to rev it a little it would die almost instantly. If you very slowly gave it gas it would rev to a point and then kinda peak and wouldnt go any higher.

Problem is i dont quite know what i'm looking at. I'm giving you all the best description i can. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Re: thinking about buying, need some questions answered.

It's hard to say, with out actually seeing the truck or hearing it run.

I can take a stab in the dark at it, I'd say its probably a mix of things. The carb may need a rebuild, the fuel filter (the one under the truck) maybe clogged, the fuel pump maybe going out, or it's timing is out.

It could be one or all of these problems or anything else, but like I said it's hard to tell with out seeing or hearing the truck run.

I just saw that on their yesterday and wished I would've waited to get it. I bought my longbox instead for the same price..lol my guess is it would be the carb or the fuel pump.

Re: thinking about buying, need some questions answered.

Thanks. i know its hard to say. I remember now that i didnt mention it's been sitting for about 5 years from what i understood. but he said that the gas is good in it. I figured that may be a problem too. Still dont know what i'm going to do... all this just for parts lol

oh and it was backfiring out of the carb when you would try to rev it. (forgot that too)

Re: thinking about buying, need some questions answered.

Like Dalaigh said, it's hard to diagnose without hearing/seeing it. Could be ignition, carb, or something as simple as a vacuum line (or lines) off.

Re: thinking about buying, need some questions answered.

it was smoking a little bit but it didn't smell like burning oil, or coolant. so i'm thinking it may be bad gas in addition to something else. I just dont have a trailer or a truck (that runs) at the moment. I'm thinking i may ask him to get it running well enough to drive back, cause otherwise i'm stuck.

Or call a wrecker, they're paid to transport from A to B.
I've done this more than once.

If he has to fix it well enough to get it running, he may just decide to keep it.
