How much is this worth?

My sister is wanting to sell me a truck she owns. Its a 1978 Shortbed BIG 10 Chevy truck. Its in mint condition. No body or interior flaws and runs great. AC works. Interior is perfect...no flaws at all. They seem to think its worth 16K. I think thats a bit too high. I want an HONEST opinion. How much is it worth? I dont want to get ripped off. I checked with the NADA Guides and it said if it has a V8 (I cant remember the motor in it) its $8,100. If the 6 then about $7,500. Does this sound about right?

Re: How much is this worth?

This guy has had this truck for sale here in Houston for at least a year and cant seem to get rid of it for $6950. I dont think anyone is forking out more than $5k-$6k for any square unless it is a mint factory BB swb, but I could be wrong.

This is the only pic I have. The inside looks as great as the outside.

FYI, that truck is a long bed. Its a great looking truck, on ebay someone might shell out some cash on it but IMHO I couldnt see paying more than $7500. It would cost way more than that to get a $2k or $3k C10 to look that good. (But I am no expert)

She may want to sell you the truck but do you want to buy it??

No question $16k is too much. In my opinion, $8k is too much as well.

Even though it might be in great shape, it still is a 35 year old truck that has (I'm guessing) not been updated with new motor etc etc.

Up here, it would sell for around $6k, maybe $6,500. So in the States where there are WAY more trucks that are rust free, probably around $5k would be more reasonable.

At the end of the day, since it's your money paying for it, you need to decide what's it worth to you and whether you could find a different truck for a price you are more willing to pay --- it may not be as perfect, but you could probably find something similar.

Re: How much is this worth?

Oh yeah thats another thing, It only has I believe 74,000Miles on it. It was only used to drive back and forth like 5miles into town and back. It was never hardly taken on the highway. Her father in law had taken excellent care of it. But given no motor has been swapped, tranny is original etc that would bring the value down.

Re: How much is this worth?

78chevygrl... That truck was exceptionally defective. It needs to be gone as soon as possible. But I tell ya what, out of the goodness of my heart and being the great guy I am, I'll come to OK with a trailer and dispose of it for you so you don't have to worry with it.

Kidding aside, that is a sharp truck

Re: How much is this worth?

Here's another random question...whats the difference in a BIG 10 or a normal 78 chevy? Cuz this one has a stamp on the back sides of the bed that says BIG 10. Pardon me for all the questions lol. I know cars and a decent amount of mechanics for a 21yr old girl but older trucks Im still learning when it comes to types etc. I know a bit more of the newer cars/trucks lol.

Re: How much is this worth?

Big 10 just carried a bigger payload (pounds). Nothing too special about it. In Texas that truck might be worth 5k pending leaks, think about gas milage cause that ain't gettin it!

Lol wow. So I talked to them today... "We wont take less than 16K...It has the original motor and transmission...no flaws and only 74k miles". So I said "Good luck! You're going to be stuck with it forever".

Tell them to put it on ebay with a $5k starting bid, a $16k reserve and let them see what kind of bids they get, that might bring them back to reality.

Not a half bad idea... makes reality slap yer face a bit though. Squares just don't bring the massive $$$'s.

Re: How much is this worth?

I love it when people think they are setting on a pile of gold. Parts whole car....whatever it may be. Makes me lmao at them. Let thee keep it. In washington state Ive seem a couple realy sweet swb's go for between 4 and 5k.

Re: How much is this worth?

The ebay idea might be a good education for your sister if she will do it. Thats a very nice truck, and has many desirable options. Unfortunately the LWB brings the value down. If it were a big block SWB it "might" sell for near that to the right buyer. Since its a LWB they just don't bring that much money. Realistically thats an 8k truck on the high end, 16k will never happen.
