What engines options were there in a 66 GMC Step-side?
My Grandfather left me a 66 GMC Step-side... Not sure of the current engine, I do know it's an inline 6 with a 3-speed MT. Also not sure if it's a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton. To be honest, I'm a rookie when it comes to trucks, I've always been a Camaro man myself.
Any help y'all can give me would be greatly appreciated. I want to restore this thing but I want to restore it with MY prefered options on it. Thanks in advance! - Penix

this site will tell you pretty much what you want to know,
http://www.6066gmctrucks.org/ scroll down to the id pages. Good Luck with it. BTW- 6-lug wheels generally mean 1/2 ton, 8 lug wheels-3/4 ton Last edited by fatboy63k10; 10-03-2003 at 09:13 AM. |

Well, the fronts are 6 but the rears are 5... Hmmm, I'll have to look into that one and see what's up. I'd like to make them all 5 since I have some old (but still really nice) Camaro Ralleye's that would look great on it. That's a 5 x 4.75" bolt pattern.

Sounds like someone pulled your Dana 44 and replaced it with something else. 10 or 12 bolt with a better gear ratio would be my guess. You can have your fronts redrilled for 5 lug.

Hmmm, I wonder then, is it possible that there are spindles out there from another car that will fit it? What about Camaro spindles? I've got plenty of those lay'n around that are in perfect condition.
As far as the rear end goes, looks like I'm gonna have to do some homework and find out what it was originally from.

Check out Jolly's 6066 GMC website regarding GMC engines!
Here is the GMC inline 6 information. http://www.6066gmctrucks.org In 1964 GMC offered the Chevrolet 230 inline six engine, it brought economy, efficiency and low initial cast to the line duty trucking industry. The time-proved 6-cylinder engine is a product of GMC Truck and Coach Division's 50 years of truck engine design experience combined with the vast resources of General Motors Research and Testing Laboratories. These engines are the same used in Chevrolet Trucks, and GMC Handi-vans. Also these are the same engine used in Canadian Chevy and GMC trucks. GMC (Chevrolet) 250 Inline Six The Chevrolet 250 L6 engines also offered in GMC Trucks, this one in 1966 it both the States and Canada. Here is a list of Inline Six Cylinder Engines used in GMC Trucks in the 1960s: 194 cid, 235 cid, 250 cid, 261 cid, 270 cid, 302 cid. There was also a 153 cid inline four used in the Handi-Van.
