replacing valve cover for the first time ever!!!

ok fellas and ladies!!! im 23 and not done much engine work but im going to attempt to do my first vavle cover gasket replacement this monday, if there is any advice of pointers you guys can give me would really ease my nerves about it! thanks 82 gmc lwb

If you got a torque wrench would be nice, but just do not overtighten the bolts and you should be good.

To make the job easier. I would go buy a set of studs and nuts. They make putting the gasket and valve covers back on so much easier. So you don’t have to fight with the gaskets and valve cover. Do not tighten it down to much or you will crack the gaskets. Other them that it’s really easy, the easiest thing to replace on a 350. here is what they look like and dont cost alot. i have the black ones on my truck.

I don't know about everybody else but I stay away from cork Gaskets. They always seem to leak on me.

they leak if you over tighten them.

Mark your spark plug wires (masking tape and a sharpie works fine), pull them off the plugs that way they'll be out of your way.

Guys i cant tell you how much this is helping! i bought the gaskets from orileys i dont think that are cork. ill mark the spark plugs, i have a 305 not a 350 it also seems like im going to have to take the air breather above the carb off and move some of the harness around just to reach the bolts that are on the intake manifold side of the vavle cover, looks scary

Yes, the air cleaner (breather) lifts right off of there after removing the wing nut at the top. Take that off and pull your plug wires and everything will be accessible.
If you run into any trouble, just add a post and we'll help you.
