Now, 33" or 35"
What is going to happen here?
I have 235/85R16 now with 4:10 gears. I am looking at 305's at 33" tall or 315's at 35" tall. What can I expect from the 35" tires? RPM, fuel mileage and speed. Which is the better choice? Buying tomorrow. Talk quick.

Jeeze guys, how do you drive?
I've never seen a vehicle flip. You? We are not talking a Jeep here. 1972 Chevy truck, LWB, 3/4, 4x4. How do the guys with 10 inches of lift survive daily driving? jef5150, please explain the premature wear on brakes, poor mileage and so forth. This should make like 3:73 gears. Should get my RPM's more livable and extend engine life. Wrong?

sound like a bunch of wet blankets!
35's should (in theory at least) reduce overall engine RPM's, like you said, making 4.11 seem like 3.73. This would increase the gas mileage. True, the bigger the tire the heavier it is, adding weight which reduces gas mileage. Sure bigger tires will be worse on u joints, but if you don't drive like a maniac, they will be ok. No smokey 4 wheel burnouts, thats all . It will make the truck easier to flip? WOW. I think if someone has an old truck, they would know that it doesn't handle the same way as a car. Especially a lifted 4x4. Have you ever driven a 4x4 cdowns? One of the big problems with SUV's today is people argue that they are much easier to flip. True, if you are an idiot. IT'S NOT A SPORTSCAR!! It is a lifted 4x4, and rides and handles as such.

My thoughts exactly. I am not rock crawling here. Just trying to fill the wheel wells and get the look I want and get RPM's down without changing axles. Axles would be the more time consuming and expensive way to go. And the 315's are only $20.00 more than the 305's. I have a 2.5" lift.
I am headed to the shop this morning to try them on and will decide then. 69 GMC, I have been called an idiot, but not for my driving. LOL

cdowns, under what conditions? Normal driving or are we talking offroading here?
I want safety first but see no problem with 35" tires. As for the concerns as to the stopping of larger tires. Don't brakes stop the entire truck? If I am hauling sand at 500 lbs. I am carrying more than the additional weight of 2 inches of tire. What am I missing here. Not trying to be smart but want to avoid a mistake.

Buy the tire's it really sound's like a great deal and I would get em for my blazer as I do not wheel it as the ad said LIKE A ROCK and chevy was not joking my blazer sink's like a rock... I am not sayin all chevy's sink like rock's but MINE DOES not everyone's... If the truck would go off road I would watch for sharp object's... But the tire's and post some pic's I would really like to see this truck with some nice wheel's on it...

if you can run them and they don`t rub,id go with 35`.no qustion.
i think most of the u joint wear is the lift/driveline angle, not tires. good luck jamie

I have been running 35's for over 25 years and I have never had it on its top and I have maybe changed 3 ujoints. I have never ripped one out. Yes guys that abuse trucks turn them over and tear them up.

I run 33s, I'd be very interested to see how 35s fit, how they look, will they rub etc with just a 2.5" lift. Can you post pics after you get 'em?
I think the main concern with brakes is the increase in rotating mass. Sure, brakes slow the truck, but they do it by slowing those big spinning gyroscopes at the axle ends. Make sense? IMO if you drive sensibly, there's no worry about flopping over. Sure, it will happen easier than in a car, but so will a stock 4x4. This post is probably too late, but I say if they fit & don't rub, and if you like the look, get the 35s. And please post pics!!!

Go with the 35's if they will fit with your lift.

I would say go for it. 35's look great, IMO. Not too much, but not stock. When I lift mine, I'm going for a 6" lift and 35's so I will have plenty of room. I do plan on taking mine offroading even more than I do now (which is occasionally) with lift + tires.
A 2.5" lift SHOULD clear 35's I'd think. My tires are 32" OD pizzacutters, no lift, and don't rub anything. True I've never had it crossed up too bad, because before I can get it that far, I always flip it on its roof seeing as how I am 19 years old and drive it like I stole it Damn younguns

Well, the damage is done.
I went and we mounted 35's and they hit. Just not enough lift. Could have added some body lift but do not have the time and really do not want it. The problem is in the front edge of the fender. When turning they cleared the rear by a hair but hit in the front. Mounted the 33's and they fit. I can fit one finger between rubber and metal at the front edge. I will post a pic tomorrow. Drove it home with the rubber side down.

Out of curiosity,
what's the actual wheel/tire size? 16 or 16.5 - and what rim width? I'm running 16.5x9.75 rims with 33/12.50s, and plan on going to 16x8 with (33") 285/75-16s; nearly same backspacing, so I'll lose close to 2" at the outer edge. FWIW, many years ago I notched off the lower front fender corner to gain clearance when turning. Not really noticable unless you're looking for it, but not something most of us would do now with these old trucks!
Glad you made it home safe LOL! Looking forward to the pic.

Here is the truck
Here it is right side up.
The clearance is only close when turning but since I don't live on a straight road I had to consider that. Actually these tires are about 2 inches taller than the 235/85R16's that came off. Wheels are 16" X 10" wide Eagle Alloy 589's. The 35's were only $20.00 bucks more but just could not get them to fit withot cutting the fender. Not gonna do it. Not .
