Engine number is CON4 A292 ???
I just cleaned the engine up and the serial number seems to have been ground off. I wonder Y? The exhaust manifold says GM1 3835388. Does this tell me its a 216?

Re: Engine number is CON4 A292 ???
For some odd reason everyone thinks that the engine in their 60 year old truck is always the original. Chances are it was replace, more than once. Or the manifold was changed due to a crack which often happened

Re: Engine number is CON4 A292 ???
Unless you are planning to compete in some sort of show where the judges get down that close to figure out who has the most original 1949 Chevy 3100 truck it doesn't really make much difference does it? If you are Anal about it go out and hunt down a "correct" 1949 manifold with the correct date codes on it.
As DW said, at some time in the past sixty three years pieces could have been changed several times on that truck and that may be the second or third manifold that was on it. Probably one reason I'm a hot rodder an customizer rather than a restorer. It's just too many headaches trying to restore a truck to exact showroom condition. |

Re: Engine number is CON4 A292 ???
All great info, thanks. I am not a show restorer. We like the AD style of trucks and its a blast rebuilding them as original as possible.
I've been educated. thanks again |
