82 Chevy brake lights stay on

I purchased this truck 2 days ago was parked for 4 years,
It needed brakes, master cylinder, new gas tank, and oil
Now its all fixed, runs and drives
Now I have a problem with the brakes they stray on all the time I push the brakes n nothing happens, so now I found the switch is at but I need some pics of the brake pedal and the switch to guide me. Thank you

Re: 82 Chevy brake lights stay on

No pictures but the first thing I would do is go under the dash and locate the switch, it should be at the top of the brake pedal in contact with the arm. There is a good possibility that if the master was bad it allowed the pedal to travel too far down and either pushed the switch out of adjustment or bent the tang that hold the switch in place and is now no longer making contact. Once you locate the switch push it with your finger and make sure it is working and makes the lights go out. If it does then adjust the switch, some push in on kinda a speed nut retainer and simply need to be pushed in to make contact. Others adjust with very thin nuts one in front of the bracket and one behind, if it is this type it probably bent the tang so tweak (bend) it so that the switch comes in contact with the pedal in the relaxed position. If the light doesn't go out when you push it with your finger then unplug it, if the light goes out then you more than likely have a bad switch (again if doesn't go out by being pushed).

Good luck.

Re: 82 Chevy brake lights stay on

I just went out and looked at mine, the is a lever about 4 inches up on the pedal that contacts the switch which is mounted to a bracket on the dash. Hang upside down and look up it is pretty obvious. I'll try to get a picture and post it, if you cant find it.
