Brake decision...

Trying to get opinions on brakes... Do I stick with the original drum/drum or upgrade to power disc/drum or the full monty power disc/disc?

I really see no need for changing out the rear... this is a daily driver nothing crazy under the hood just a 283 maybe in the future might swap to a 350. I am not driving highways or high speeds.

Any opinions...

Re: Brake decision...

I would swap to the disc in front. The drums work fine but in traffic they do tend to fade.Obviously power is nicer for pedal pressure and unless it's a show truc where you don't want a booster cluttering up under the hood,it just makes sense. So I vote Power disc/drum.It's a simple enough swap, but keep in mind,it widens the front track by 3/4 in each side.

Re: Brake decision...

I coverted mine to power disk. Got the whole kit from CPP. They have the whole kit in a box. Pretty easy to do.

Re: Brake decision...

It all depends on how much work you want to put in it and how much money you want to spend. The front disc conversion would the best option. The second would be a complete rework of the drum brakes system including a power brake booster. I wanted to keep my 68 GMC as original as I could so I redid my drum/drum brakes and they work really well for the little driving I do.

To give you an idea on cost I spent about $300 for new shoes, turning all the drums, new brake cylinders, all rubber hoses, master cylinder and booster. This was about 2 years ago, and from what I see the cost of parts have gone up considerably in the last two years.

I like the disc /drum option for a daily driver. You can even hit a scrap yard and get parts from a 73 up to save on cost.

Re: Brake decision...

Having had both, I love the consistent stopping power of power disc/drum. The rears do the lesser part of the stopping, so I don't see the need for discs back there, and that's a lot more work and expense.

Re: Brake decision...

I'd vote disc/drum. I did a full-disc conversion on my '69 2+2 (think Impala) and have had nothing but misery from it. No idea whether it's a mismatch between the master size and the Cadillac rear calipers or what, but it sucks.

I just retrofitted front discs to my '70 drum-drum truck, but used all factory parts from a '72 disc brake equipped truck. I'm a big fan of matched systems.

Re: Brake decision...

Thanks for all the suggestions... I will continue with the drum/drum until winter when I take it off the road and over the winter will most likely go power disc/drum.
