Yeah they're high, but are Porterbuilts worth it?

I am intently following the hard and industrious work posted on here about the pancaked front cross members. As one who likes the feeling of accomplishment in a job well done, doing that work on my '65 intrigues me. However, after the many references to the Porterbuilts, I decided to look them up. They look like really neat units. Who on this forum has them and how do they like them? Thanks.

I used to run a pancaked crossmember.
But I'm now running a porterbuilt dropmember.
It addresses ALL of the issues of having one of these trucks really low.
AND. You get the narrowed track, so you can still turn while driving low.

This is an issue with the pancaked deal. Unless you buy or build narrowed control arms. ( the same money as a DM)
Or plan on running skinny wheels and rubber.

If you can swing a Dropmember $$$

It looks to me like you have to convert to a rack and pinion with the Porterbuilt. What about other parts? If I currently have a '71 cross member, will the stock upper and lower arms work with the Porterbuilt? Thanks for everyone's input.

Yes you have to run a rack, the DM uses 79-93 mustang rack( pretty common) and you'll also need some steering joints (at least two) some Double D steering shaft.

You will be able to use your upper control arms, but must use 73+ lowers.

Thanks for the info, Slammed. What about the bags? Can you install coils on there or does it have to be an air ride system? Finally, is there a quick way to ID what years of lower arms I may have? I can't remember what year the guy told me that the front end under my 'Burb is. He might have said '73 but it has been a while and I've slept since then.

Give them a call and they will be more than happy to give you tons of options, including phasing. I hate the idea of buying parts that I'll end up not using, so they allowed me to purchase the adjustable panhard bar and shock relocation kit from their Stage 1 kit, A la carte, so to speak. I'm running lowered coils now, but if I ever decide to bag it, I can then simply buy the remaining parts.

If your control arms have rubber bushings they are 73+.

I have porterbuilt on one burb, everything was bolt in and nice, I ran into a couple issues due to motor choice and Nate was on top of it to get me going in the right direction. My other burb am running stock crossmember but do not plan on laying frame with it.
