Suburban tailgate removal

I have an 87 suburban that I'm using for parts. I would like to remove the tailgate after removing the engine and part of the wiring. I want the rear window mechanism for a rear window project on my 68 GMC.

My question is does anyone know how to remove this with no power? It appears the window needs to come down so the tailgate can open. does anyone know how to get the window down and the tailgate open without power? or what color the wires are that need power to get it down?

You'll need to climb in the back and remove the big panel on the tail gate.

Then remove the cable and you can hand twist the shaft to lower the window down if its not in a bind or put a drill on the cable.

I did this at pick n pull once. I took an 18volt Dewalt drill battey and connected a wire to each lead. I hooked one wire I a good ground (I used the bucket seat tracks) and then with the other wire I hooked it to the leads coming out of the dash where the switch was(someone else already picked it). Eventually you'll find the right wire and it will go down. Once it's down drop the tailgate. To make the window come out enought to get to the Moter with the tailgate down you'll need to find an press the safety switch. On my 85 it is on the passenger side where the locking hatch is. Stick your finger in there and you should feel a button. Have some one press it while you prob the wires again to make it go up.

This is how I did it when the power rear window on my Burb got misasligned and wouldn't drop more than an inch or so

* Remove tailgate access panel
* Unbolt glass sash cam channels
* Detach regulator arms & remove cam channels
* Ease glass down & lower tailgate

I finally got it. I took the access panel off and found the wires to the electric motor. I took a small motorcycle battery and attached the wires to a ground and power wire and just lowered the window down. Then removed the tailgate. Thanks for you help guys!

Worked out great didn't it! I racked my brain for munths trying to figure out how i was gonna do that at pick n pull, all for a $4 part. Glad to hear it worked for ya.
