305 V6 starting question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I've been trying to get the 305 in my 60 GMC running and I noticed it's really slow cranking. I'm used to 6.2 diesels and 350's and they seem to spin roughly twice as fast as the V6. Is that normal, or should I think about servicing (if possible) the starter? The PO had the engine running a week before I bought it (roughly 2 weeks ago now) and the neghbors confirmed that too. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

May be starter or battery. My 305 clicks over pretty fast and starts right usually.

Thanks!!! I'm pretty sure the battery is good, it's an optima yellow top that's only a couple years old. I do have the big optima red top in my camaro, I'll try using that next time...IIRC it has more cold cranking amps. Being how the truck has sat for so long, I check and clean the connections down there too. Looks like I'm gonna be busy for a little while. Thanks again!

Starting shouldn't be that much different, but the RPMS will be lower. These big heavy engines maxed out at about 3800 RPMs. That's alot of iron to be spinning around very fast.

Some people are like slinkys. Not worth much but funny as heck when pushed down stairs.
