Power steering pump install, bracket and pulleys
I have exhausted the search thread but cannot find the answer I am looking for. I picked up upfront clip off of the 77 Chevy. I am installing a power steering gear into my 62 Chevy. I picked up a power steering pump and hoses. I think I have a short water pump so I'm going to be able to find a power steering mounting brackets however what is the best option for routing the belts? do I need to obtain a set of double belt pulleys or continue one belt around the alternator, , crank, water pump, and power steering?

Double pulley
as the power steering will use its own belt |

Re: Power steering pump install, bracket and pulleys
Yes, I agree double pulleys. Also, one of the best ways to to see what is typically done is to go to a car show and look at car and truck motors that of the 1960's vintage (short water pump). One more recommendation .... take your digital camera and take lots of pictures. I do this all the time and boy does it help weeks and months down the road (perfect recall you might say).

Re: Power steering pump install, bracket and pulleys
With the short water pump, the crank will have either 2 or 3 grooves. The water pump, alternator and power steering pump will all typically have 1 groove. The crank groove closest to the balancer will drive the water pump and alternator. The groove farthest out on the crank will drive the power steering pump.

Re: Power steering pump install, bracket and pulleys
I was looking on JEGS and Summit Racing. It appears that if I order a short pump, 2 groove crank pulley that I should be able to make it work. Am I right?

Re: Power steering pump install, bracket and pulleys
That depends on the crank pulley. The power steering is driven off of what would actually be the 3rd groove, if the grooves were side by side. Some of the factory crank pulleys for the short water pump, actually did not have the 2nd groove. Just the one closest to the balancer and the one for the power steering pump which was out a little ways.
Here is about the best pic I could find. This engine does have the 2 groove water pump pulley commonly used with A/C applications. The A/C compressor would be driven off of the 2nd crank groove and the 2nd water pump pulley groove.
