Paint/clear coat trouble
Hi.I got an old 66 GMC and repainted the tailgate with Rustoleum Enamel gloss black..The paint feels rock solid and gave a nice finish for a budget job.I then applied a rustoleum clear coat (acrylic) and almost immediately the paint started getting bubbly looking and then peeled in spots.Any ideas as to what happened?
Ive always had great luck with rustoleum paints, but this is the first time I tried the clear coat. |

Re: Paint/clear coat trouble
I have been having the same problem with their paints also. (If you are referring to rattle cans) For some reason I have to spray about 1/4 of the can to get the ball to shake so the paint will mix correctly. If I don't do that it will gum up, splatter or do what you are talking about. I wrote the company about the problem. I would sand it down and do over with dupli-color.

Re: Paint/clear coat trouble
sounds like a chemical reaction. Alot of times the solvents in the paint or clear can and will react to the under surfaces, causing them to lift.
Years ago, this was common with alot of laquer products applied over acrylic enamel. To prevent this, a sealer should be applied over original surfaces. I'd also recommend using an automotive paint, duplicolor makes paint in spray cans and also an easy to apply clear. These are compatible with almost all paints. To help fix your problem, you'll need to sand the surface of all loose paint, prime and seal the area, then repaint. I'd also make sure you give the color plenty of time to dry before adding clear. And contrary to popular thought, not all paints can be clear coated over. |

Re: Paint/clear coat trouble
Ok...Do I really need to clear coat it?The truck is just an old work truck and as long as the paint will hold up to rain and such,I dont really care if its "pretty".

Re: Paint/clear coat trouble
No, I don't think you need one.
