Re: Shorty™
Picked up a pretty clean Sub bumper at the pick n pull this weekend. Had the bumper pad, which I removed, so the holes are visible, but for $50, it beats the hell out of that crusty old step bumper.

Re: Shorty™
Kinda thinking about changing it up slightly with this truck. Been considering going with 17’s, but then I started thinking 20’s would be a little cooler. It’s got a little too much rake for my tastes, so I’m going to pick up a set of shackles and drop the back another inch or two. The bed is shot, and needs to be replaced, so rather than try to match the paint, I was thinking about re-spraying the truck in a semi-gloss black. Hot Rod Flatz or something of the like. It’s my daily, so I want something that looks nice, but I don’t have to worry about leaving in a parking lot for a while.
Any thoughts? |

Re: Shorty™
Sooo…
Shorty spun a bearing. Sucks. Sourced a “new” 305 long block for a simple R&R. Picked up the “new” 305 and I think the guy buried it in a sand box for safe keeping. Thankfully, RFMaster offered to jump in and school me on how to teardown and rebuild a SBC, seeing as how I’ve never done it before and I was kinda mind-f*****g it. Decided since I had the engine out, I’d upgrade the cam, intake and exhaust. Picked up an Edelbrock Performer intake and some Edelbrock shorties on Flakeslist and ordered a SpeedPro CS1014R cam from Northern when I ordered the gaskets and other misc. rebuild stuffs. RFMaster made the trek up from the OC Sunday morning and we blew the engine down to the nuts and bolts, cleaned the block/crank/cam and started reassembly. Got the crank and cam installed but got hung up on a .99 soft plug for the oil galley and had to call it a day. Gonna get back on it this week and try to get this thing buttoned up and down to RF’s place for break in. Why the 305 and not a 350? Eh…it’s what was original to the truck, plus everyone has a 350. I like to be a little quirky. It’s not a tow rig, and it’s not a drag truck. It’s a little commuter and that’s where the 305 shines. The 305 is a good engine and with the little mods we planned, RF thinks she’ll scoot pretty good while retaining emissions compatibility. Interestingly enough, when I pulled the engine that was in the truck, I ran the casting numbers and it came back as a 350, so, evidently, someone’s been down this road before. There’s a possibility I might salvage the block and mothball it for a future 383 project, but that’s *real* low on the priority list. Also interesting was the cam that came out of the “new” 305. Ran the numbers and it came up as a Crane PowerMax 113942. I offered it to RF as a small token for my immense appreciation for selflessly using his Sunday to school a rebuild virgin. I am deeply indebted to him. No pics this time, but I’ll get a few when there’s something exciting to look at. |

Re: Shorty™
Eh, no biggie. It's pretty evident that, aside from the paint, the PO didn't really care for the truck the way it should have been cared for.
As for the engine, it’s all in the way you look at it. I wanted to do a TBI swap in the future, so I’d be building an engine for it eventually. I just look at it as I got that part out of the way. Now all that’s left is the throttle body/harness/computer/fuel delivery. For now, it’ll be powered by the Quad that it came with, but once I finish my dually, I’ll finish the TBI swap on this truck. It’s all good. The only thing that sucks is being down to one truck. Mamma’s pretty cool about me stealing the SuperSub to get back and forth to work, but I can sense her patience is wearing thin. I gotta get shorty back on the road – happy wife, happy life. Last edited by JCampbell; 04-08-2013 at 07:30 PM. |

Re: Shorty™
Yeah, I'm pretty jazzed. I've never "built" an engine before. You know...like cam, intake..."modified" built. Even though it's just a little 305, I'm pretty stoked.
Oh, and the heads happen to be the 416 "HO" heads off the SS Monte Carlo and Z28 Camaro, so that should give it a little more "juice", too. |

Re: Shorty™
Managed to get a few pics today. Didn't set the world on fire, but I'm hoping to get 'er buttoned up tomorrow.
As for the engine builder, he had a tough time getting to 50 ft/lbs, but I jumped in and gave him a hand. |

Re: Shorty™
Despite a fairly hectic weekend, I managed to sneak out to the garage for a bit. Buttoned up the heads and valvetrain. Mounted the fuel pump. Threw the headers on to check spark plug wire clearances. Tossed the intake on just to get a few pics. Starting to look like something now. Still need chrome valve covers, but you get the idea.

Re: Shorty™
Very nice! There is nothing wrong with a 305, my short C10 is a great tow rig, just a little slower up the hills.

Re: Shorty™
Good to know. It’s my first 305. This truck is more of a commuter/daily driver than anything else. From what I’ve heard/read, that's where the 305 really shines.
