Transmission removal help

I'm trying to remove my transmission (3 speed manual), but can't get the drive shaft free. I've disconnected the shaft from the rear differential, but it won't pull loose from the transmission. Any advice? I've tried beating on it with a hammer at the transmission end, and I've wrapped a chain around the other end and used a crow bar, but so far no luck. I thought it was supposed to just slip right off??

One piece driveshaft?

Then yes, the slip yoke should just "slip" off. I guess it could be seized on to the tailshaft or it's been twisted and the threads got bunged up. Have you tried hitting it with some heat?

No, I don't have a torch. I plan to hook a come-along to it tomorrow morning. And then beat it with a hammer again. Not sure what else to do...

wow. never heard of such a thing. has the truck been sitting outside not running for a long time? I think tension and a slight hammer rap might do the trick. Wow, just when you think you've heard it all! Keep us posted.

Try to make it move further into the transmission. Block of wood and a BFH on the end of the driveshaft. If it moves inward any it might break it loose. Once it starts moving go in and out till it breaks free.

The truck was running when I bought a few months ago, and I drove it into my garage before tearing it down. Although, from the look of the underside, it's been slinging fluid out the back of the transmission for a while.

Could be pulling a vacuum, if there is no air-hole in back of yoke going into trans. If all else fails, remove the u-joint and shaft from front yoke. Drill an air relief hole thru end of yoke to allow removal. When done, drill & tap and screw a plug into hole with loctite.

Got the transmission out of the truck. In the end I had to take apart the U joint at the transmission end of the driveshaft. The slip yoke is still attached to the transmission...
