going electric ........
If I choose to go with a dual or single electric fan(s) for my K5 and my c-10, can i completely eliminate the entire fan assembly from my engine? I've never done this before. Any pics of this from your trucks?

Re: going electric ........
Do yourself a favor. Go to the junkyard and pull a fan from a 3.8 F*rd taurus/Thunderbird, with the 2 speed motor (3 wires). Then find a Volvo 850-950, and steal the 2 speed fan relay. add 2 more small relays and a temp switch in the system, and you have a 2 speed fan, that'll run on low speed, then kick high on when you turn your A/C on. and the best part? it pulls 4500CFM (a LOT more than most aftermarket fans) for less than a $100 total investment.

Re: going electric ........
I switched my 72 blazer over to dual electric fans when I did the 6.0 swap. I used fans from a 4th gen camaro and the size was perfect for the truck size radiator. I control them with the factory LS computer. Works slick, opens up the engine compartment, and free's up HP too.
I've been thinking hard about a dual electric fan swap on my 79 1 ton. I tow alot with it, and I like to keep the 502 as cool as possible. It still sports the original harrison 4 core radiator, and after 33 years I'm to the point I don't trust it anymore May just do a custom aluminum rad from a shop here local, along with custom dual electric fans for optimum cooling capacity. |

Re: going electric ........
Best I could do with paint... the 2 other relays are just standard relays found at a parts store. This also will not let your fan stay on with the ign. off. Oh and the diagram doesnt show fuses...

Re: going electric ........
The Taurus fan does not pull 4500 CFM- the Taurus fan is rated at 3600-3800 max while the T-bird fan is larger and high speed max on it is 4200-4400 CFM so both fans are fairly stout and agreed they both perform Better than any aftermarket fan(s).

Re: going electric ........
Ah... yeah that's true... the one I have is the T-bird fan, with the sail blades. I got them confused. AND if you kill a motor, most auto parts stores stock them.

Re: going electric ........
I am running a Taurus fan also...Currently using only the low speed (no a/c in the truck).
Thinking of trying this set up. http://stores.homestead.com/hstrial-...lay/Detail.bok |

Re: going electric ........
Can it be hard wired to run all the time or would it always run on the low setting? Is there any way it can be hard wired and run on both speeds as needed? By hard wired I mean with no switch.

Re: going electric ........
yea it can just take the wire from the temp sensor and give it ground

Re: going electric ........
If I do that, will the fan run at both the low and high speeds?

Re: going electric ........
If you just ground the temp sender wire on my circuit, it will run on low as long as the key is on. if you feed the A/C wire with 12V ignition on, it'll run on high. As far as running both speeds... Hmm.. Good point.. lemme do some checking on that volvo relay.

Re: going electric ........
I use the Taurus fan on my 79 Camaro Z28 with the BMW temp switch and relays with no problems. With AC in the off position fan never switches to high.Motor is a SBC 350 with a voodoo 103 cam and AFR heads.
Here are the parts I used for my setup: Taurus Fan BMW Switch Information: #61318361787--BMW temp switch 180*/195*--I used this one......... #61311378073--BMW temp switch 195*/210* #61131378412--BMW 90* angle connector #61130007445--BMW 90* green connector wires 2 required #61130007446--BMW 90* green/black connector wire for ground #1398845--------VOLVO dual fan relay, #3523813--------VOLVO white wire assembly for temp switch 2 required Parts I ordered from: http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/61130007445/ http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/61318361787/ES2187553/ http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/61131378412/ES164509/ Here is some good information: http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=200028

Re: going electric ........
OK... I'm glad you said something.. I must have been too tired last night. here is a revised setup... I know, 4 relays are a bit much to run a fan, but with the 40+ amps these things draw, you need that volvo relay. you could simplify it by simply running high and low speed on a temp switch, but this is the way i will set up mine, so if i need high speed, i can simply kick my A/C on, and the fan will not run once the ignition is shut off. The third relay is simply to kick low speed off once the A/C is switched on.

Re: going electric ........
A properly wired 2-speed relay used with an AC override relay is all you Need. 3 relays will do it-I prefer to run either speed through a 70-amp relay with fused protection-a speed will only draw what it needs to. Parts store relays are pretty cheap in quality and you don't want it melting internally creating a fire hazard. I am experienced with both the Volvo setup and well as standalone variable speed relay harnesses and aftermarket dual speed relay setups. There are much better options for a dual speed relay than the Volvo one although for lowr amperage drawing fans, they work well.

Re: going electric ........
is it possible to run a 2 speed fan such as the t bird fan on two seperate temp switches instead of an a/c switch? for example i dont have a/c hooked up but am thinking about the 2 speed set up with a primary switch at say... 210 deg. and the high speed wire run to another temp switch at say 230 deg. so in the occasion it should happen to get to warm for the low speed to cool it or the low speed should burn out for some reason id have a back up. which year t birds work and what motor? also can someone post up a relayed wire diagram for the set up im thinking running if it would work. and lastly...sorry... does anyone have picks of the tbird set up? do you just use regular electric fan ziptie studs or what to mount it?

Re: going electric ........
Ditto. For me, the electrical part is easy. But I'd like to see pictures and maybe some tips on the fitting and mounting aspects.
