fan clutch

I have heard good and bad about fan clutches. What do you all think.

I'm a huge proponent of fan clutches. To me, I'll always run one if I have the room.

I use them and replace them when I suspect its failing. If you dont use one, Id recommend a flex fan.

My thinking is that if they didn't work the OEM wouldn't use them. If I don't have the room, I use electric- never been to keen on the tin and plastic flex fans. JMO

How do you know (suspect) if it's failing?

For us that are in the dark about clutch fans, what year and model car/truck can i use in my truck? I'm running a 350 that currently has a po installed flex fan. It don't overheat but i want to get rid of that annoyingnwind tunnel noise that said flex fan makes. Thanx in advance.

If you can grab the fan while the engine is running, and hold it from spinning, the fan clutch is toast.

If you grab the fan while the engine is running, and it cuts your fingers off, the fan clutch is still good.

I use the clutch and fan from a 69 Chevelle with 350 and A/C on my 64 C10 with a 350 engine.

As it turns out, I own a 69 Chevelle, and the stock clutch and fan cool it nicely. I test fit the assembly onto my 64 C10, and it worked perfectly, so I bought another identical assembly to use on the truck.

The only minor thing I don't like about clutch fans is that they are engaged when you first start a cold engine which makes them noisy when they don't have to be. After a minute or so, the centrifugal forces disengage until it re-engages when the temps warrant more cooling.

Other than that, they pull huge amounts of air when needed.

I was over at a friend of mines house he had a 1971 nova with a 427 4 speed just had it finished it had a mirror glossy black paint job on it over 4000 back in 1979.I was not there when it happened.he was revving up the motor one last time not more then 3 mins before it happen he was adjusting the carb and hitting the throttle with hard throws.He shut the hood sat in the bucket seat.

We all do it. just one last time.that flex fan made him cry.Its like a middle finger.he had a 7 blade metal one on there but he wanted that 2 more HP.When i saw it I asked him was it worth the extra 2 hp I was 8 years old smart mouth.

He was a very good friend of the family .He put me on his lap and hugged me really tight.

at the time I just thought he needed something to hold.Really tight

All he said was This is how your car talk's to you.Then he got up went in side to get a beer and chips

Yep. They do talk a little when cold and when really warm start sounding like a B52 BUT, Ive never even worried about the 21" that I have on the Big Block. Wouldn't event think about using an electric primary fan on this truck.
