700r4 question
I have an 82 2wd blazer and the transmission is on its last leg. I am planning on replacing it as soon as I can but in the meantime, I have to let up off of the gas (all the way) for it to shift. The first shift is pretty hard and the rest are ok but it is still a pain. Is the tranny controlled by any vacuum lines or is there something that I can replace that can fix the problem (for now)?
Any help would be appreciated! |

How does it run otherwise? It could be your throttle position sensor (TPS) going bad....

a 1982 C/K truck would not have a TPS unless someone installed fuel injection at some point or the truck is a diesel with c/c?

The 700 uses a TV (throttle valve) cable, and it uses the line pressure to control shifts. Cable out = larger throttle opening. They do not use vacuum at all, like a TH 350 or 400. You may be able to reset the cable to help it out, providing the trans is not already toast.

Thanks, I will actually replace it and adjust it after that because the plastic that connects to the tranny is broken. I will let everyone know how it turns out.

The Blazer never shifted so well in its life!
The funny thing about it is that it only took 1 minute. I open the hood and hop in (and I'm lazy so I don't even pull of the air filter housing). I fumble around until I can push the little tab in and pull the cable housing with my other hand and pull it a little. I figured that I would try it just a little bit and adjust it after that. I went back inside to get the keys and got busy and forgot about it. Later on, I get in the Blazer, start it up and start driving down the street... before I know it it shifts smoothly and I wasn't even expecting it because I forgot I even adjusted the cable. HOLY CR*P, I don't think I've been this happy about something so small in my life. Thanks for everyone's input. This board is awesome and the people are even better!

hah ai know that feeling. just makes you want to do a huge burnout and hug your truck. i thought my 700 was going out because it would go crazy in 3rd gear and jerk. but it turned out that my fuel pump was going out and the bowls wouldnt empty out till it shifted into 3rd. anyways, happy motoring!!!!
