Power Steering Hookup Question

I upgraded my 65 C10 to power steering awhile back using a 72 pump and steering box. Now I’m swapping out the Gen I small block 350 with a 05 5.3 Vortec. How have you guys connected the modern power steering pump to the vintage power steering box?

Remove the 1" pressure regulator nut on the '72 pump & Install it on the '05 pump, Easy as that.

I used 05 truck accessories with the hydroboost truck pump, and a 72 steering gear/rack. since the pump came with lines, I just put the returns on with clamps (low pressure) and the high pressure metal line I just cut the end off of, and flared the SAE fitting off the 72 box onto the end. Took 10 minutes, works fine. My steering may be considered a bit overboosted since I didn't mess with any pressure stuff (although for the way my truck is setup and feels, I don't mind it much)

That way will work without a doubt.

Though doing it my way doesnt require modifying the hose....He can reuse his '72 hose with 45 degree flares on both ends. This pays off in the long run....If he buys a hose later, He doesnt have modify the new hose & void the warranty.

I'm using a 68-72 steering gear with the OEM 5.3 pump with no issues.

I plumbed my Gen3 pump right into the 81 Box and no problems, seems to have plenty of turning power for the 35's.

I used a SAE to metric inverted flare adapter from Napa for less than $10. Screws right into your new pump, and your old line screws into it. Sorry I dont have the number.

Same as above, Put Locktight on both adapter and hose end fitting though. Mine worked loose on drive from Arkansas to Arizona twice. No problems now though. Good luck. And the steering is probably the easiest of any truck I've ever owned. 2005 5.3, believe its the hydraboost pump and the stock 68 power steering gearbox. ?, has anybody put a cooler on their power steering circuit.

In case anyone is looking for this fitting, NAPA no longer stocks it even though it shows up on the web site. They will order it from the factory but you have to buy a minimum of 5. They do have the same fitting made by Gates, (PN G49702-1606) it's the same fitting and $10 cheaper than the one made by Weatherhead. The guy at my shop had to call around to find one but I was able to get the next day.

Wanted to revive this subject because I ran into a leaky pressure hose. I originally used Summit brand braided hose and 90° hose ends with Earls power steering adapters. After about 2000 miles the pressure line began to leak pretty bad so I have gone back to the drawing board. I found that Russell makes fittings and hose specifically for power steering. I ordered 3 hose ends and 6ft of their power flex hose from Summit Racing, and will keep the Earls fittings in the pump and the box. Hopefully this will prove to be sufficient.

3ea -6 to 90° hose ends (RUS-620421)
6ft of their power flex hose (RUS-632610)
1ea EAR-991947ERL -6 TO 5/8-18 (box)
1ea EAR-991950ERL -6 TO 11/16-18 (box)

If you still have your old pump....Just remove the old fitting & put it in the late model pump.

There is no specs on the fitting in the link, So I don't know if it will work.

I would go to a wreaking yard & get the right fitting...Any 70's GM/Saginaw pump will have the fitting you need.

This is the fitting I used with my swap and it worked fine. I have 1000 miles on the new motor with no leaks. I did use loctight on the threads so it wouldn't losen.

I went by Napa and picked up the 1446 adapter today. Screwed right in, already had the hose screwed into the gear box. Took a little finagling, but it went right in.

Ok, so the 1446 adapter looks great (albeit expensive) if you want to use the old hoses, but how about a fitting that will thread into my '79 K15 steering box (flare) and give me a female o-ring thread to put the '97 Vortec P/S pump lines into? I thought I found it at Speedway but can't re-find it after a re-boot. Please tell me someone has found this.

I went to the junk yard and pulled the 1 inch hose fitting out of the back of the pump off an 72 and screwed it I. to my L's pump the junkyard only charged me a dollar for the pressure fitting g

That's too easy, People rather buy adaptors, Cut up hoses, Or buy leaky aftermarket crap

Oh I know but I wanted easy quick fix if I ever blew a hose while on a trip by using that fitting I can use the stock 1971 hose
