Check Engine light/dash/not running issure. K5
Afternoon, I don't venture over here very often, im a 67-72/99-07 guy. But my dad has owned K5 blazers since 77. He purchased an 87 K5 with the fuel injected LO5 (350) and 47k original miles.
Its been sitting for a year, most of the time its been inside. Its been running good, we move it around the shop and he lets it run. Today he backed it outside and it sat outside all day (its cold here 19 degrees). Started it up and got about 20 ft and it died trying to get it back inside. He said it just quit and now the check engine light is one. I figured gas, but it has plenty, and i put 5 gallons of fresh in it just to be sure, won't start. Seems to have good spark from the coil. The dash is out, only thing that works is the Volt gauge and the speedo. Here is the quesiton (s) 1 What do i need to check the CEL? My innova tool won't do it. 2 Is the cluster bad? Is there are specific thing i need to look for? I dont deal with these very often, so i'm kind of lost on this one. The CEL is my biggest concern at this point. Thank you Glen

If the CEL is coming on, at least it works. Try jumping the A&B terminals of the ALDL plug under the dash to put it in field service mode. You should get 3 "12" flashes, then count the number(s) of flashes).
Pull the air cleaner off and see what kind of pattern you have from the injectors. If it isn't priming, I would look at possibly a dead fuel pump (or possibly clogged lines). If it primes, the relay would be my guess. You could put some gas in a squeeze bottle to get it inside. As far as I know, the dash shouldn't be an issue, if you are just moving it in and out of a building. |

I pulled the air cleaner off, plenty of fuel, but its rank. I'd say the fuel gave up. I'm going to replace the cap and rotor also, just to be sure its not a bad rotor of something.
We are redoing a few things so dad can drive it, he's a little weird when it comes to vehicles, since the dash is out, he won't drive it. lol. old guys, never happy! I'll try jumping, see what i can get for codes. Thanks Glen

Could be a dead ignition module.

Thats exactly what it was, replaced it, fired right up. Still the matter of the dash, only guage working is the voltage, i'm going to remove the cluster, see what is going on with that.

On the dash, you might check the gauges fuse. Seems odd they would all go out.

Fuse is fine, i'm thinking the printed circuit must be bad. Thats the next step. It sucks not having oil pressure and a fuel gauge.
