1963 230 L6 harmonic balancer question
I searched the forum and I can't find anything to answer my question. I have a 230 L6 1963 and the lower pulley below the fan is wobbling really bad, it appears to be a harmonic balancer....it is only one of three pulleys on my engine...should I be looking for a harmonic balancer? The only ones I can find look like they have no groove for a v-belt which my truck uses. Any insight on where to find a new one, what is this pulley called so I know what to ask for? Thanks in advance!

I believe the pully bolts to the balancer. If its all wobbly, try removing the pully and checkin with a straight edge or see if it lays flat on a flat surface. Maybe its just a bit warped.

On your 6 cylinder, the harmonic balancer is the pulley. You need to replace the entire balancer. If the rubber is deteriorated, you will wind up flinging the outer ring off the hub at speed. I've learned that one the hard way.

They are pretty good. Not everything is american made but if you don't like it on receipt, just pack up, fill out the paperwork and mail it back. When ya change it, might as well replace the timing cover seal. If I recall correctly, on summa the 6's and 8's Motors says you can replace the seal w/o removing the timeing cover.

Oh hell no to LMC. No sense getting raped.
Dorman part number 594-014 fits 230 engines and is available at most any parts house for 60 dollars. Little rant here...... LMC doesn't make anything but a colorful catalog. They simply buy other people's products and resell them. You pay a premium for this and you get poor customer service in the bargain. Always figure out what they are selling and buy it direct from some place cheaper. I'm dead loyal and almost never shop for price, but many of the folks at LMC couldn't fog up a mirror when it comes to auto parts. For that reason, I always discount buying from them. |

I've put one of those Dorman units on all the sixes I've built, including the 230 in my 63. The 250 and 230 units interchange other than some having single pulley grooves and other having double grooves. You may end up with an unused pulley groove.

Looks like only Autozone has it. Special order item. Ship to house or perhaps you can ship to store for local pickup. Under 60 bucks, prolly have to add shipping. I don't have any discount codes for autozone though.

This is not a DIY project. You can't replace the rubber yourself, but there are places to have yours rebuilt...or buy a rebuilt one. It's just a process of pouring fresh elastomeric rubber and bonding the ring in place.
see: Damperdoctor.com There is a fellow (in Oregon I believe) who does this also, I had mine rebuilt by him. Search this site as well as the web. Also, the 230/250 are interchangeable, but not the 292..don't accidentally get a 292 balancer. Whatever you do, DO NOT RUN THE ENGINE until you replace it! See Txfirefighters comment again.

They do interchange, but the 230 has a single belt groove and the 250 has two belt grooves. Other than having an unused groove, functionally they swap.

The 230 and 250 engines are nuetral balance, so the damper(balancers) interchange. The difference, as stated above is either single or double groove,mostly due to more options available on the later engine, needed the extra belt. |
