92 c1500 anti lock brake swap

Is it possible or not to take the anti lock brakes from say a 92 c1500 and put that on a square body? ..has anyone tried it...or are there too many conflicts?
thanks for any thoughts or help Ray

Re: 92 c1500 anti lock brake swap

Why would you want to make it harder to stop?

A good addition would be a dodge 8-3/4 axle that has anti lock breaks on just the rear axle which is where it matter most. There's a reluctor ring they use that can be adapted to most dodge axles. I belive mopar mag did this to a early Dakota.

anything's possible but why would you want to? IMO ABS wouldn't offer you anything but headaches and hassle.

If you are serious the Kelsey-Hayes RWAL would be easiest, it would just need a signal from a vss. you can use one of those adapters on the speedo cable. it might keep the rear from locking up. Maybe.

How? The stock brakes barely provide enough pressure to lock the front wheels, if you're lucky the rear brakes do anything at all. If you upgrade to big brakes that do have some stopping power you'd get better bang for your buck to upgrade tires than to try to cobble ABS on.

Personally, I have never been in a position where ABS provided me any additional control or stability. I've rolled through many an intersection with ABS working as hard as it could to keep me from sliding when a sideways slide and a bump against the curb before the intersection would have been preferred. Others may have had other experiences, but IMO ABS is a joke.

Abs is a for the most part a controlled stop and in almost all cases a faster stop. Not going into how they work but know they are awesome.

Re: 92 c1500 anti lock brake swap

The 88-98 trucks are RWAL, the rear brake line pressure is modulated based on seeing front to rear speed differences. Thre is no antilock on the front. My personal experience in driving one 215.000 miles was that it was no help on ice, dangerous in the rain, and would go off when not needed when stopping on bumpy roads. In my 10 years of driving it in Michigan, on all types of raods and all types of conditions, it never once helped me stop.

If you wish to do it the best way is to swap the entire rear with new brackets and offset wheels and use the 88-up lowering spindle swap documented in the Suspension area. Then you essentially have a 1988-up runnng gear. But as pointed out above there are more effective ways to do it and probaby at less cost.

Re: 92 c1500 anti lock brake swap

I unplugged the Maxi-Fuse and the dash warning light from the ABS on my T400 truck.
IMHO it's a poorly implemented system. If I drove over a small bump while braking the ABS kicked in wildly extending the stopping distance. I'd look elsewhere for braking improvements. This aint it.

Replace all three flex lines, completely flush the fluid with fresh clean DOT4 fluid, and adjust the takeup wheel on the drum brakes. It's a good on-the-cheap weekend "upgrade". You'll feel the difference immediately.

Wider drum brakes from a heavy duty model in your tonnage will make a difference on-the-cheap.

More $...
Hydroboost from a K30 or diesel model.
Rear disc brake upgrade that includes upgrading to a rear-disc combination valve and rear-disc master cylinder.

Re: 92 c1500 anti lock brake swap

Don't even think about it. Sure, ABS does provide some advantages otherwise it wouldn't be standard equipment on all cars today, but for some system from a newer vehicle cobbled onto an older vehicle with no adjustments or tuning, it just seems like a recipe for failure.

Furthermore, ABS is geared toward the average person, think Ralph Nader for example, who freaks out and slams their foot to the floor and then files a lawsuit against the car manufacturer. Idiot proof.

But do think about this. http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/chas...ension/lbs.htm

Re: 92 c1500 anti lock brake swap

And is good for your gf but not for you a I say. It's been proven a non and car can stop yards sooner than a and equipped car WHEN the drive know how to modulate brakes rather than just skidding to a stop. Had a 98s10 with antilock you slanes on the brakes in the rain and it dance up and down side to side. My gfs BMW when you hit the brakes over a seer drain its so sensitive that the one wheel hops and skips for three feet before it stops

Re: 92 c1500 anti lock brake swap

I seen a early camaro they put a corvette abs on it,It looked like a nightmare of a swap to me.First the doner truck has to weight about the same as your truck does now.You need the whole system from spindles to rear end.
