Manual transmission options
Hey guys I'm sure this has been covered multiple times but from what I've searched on google I can't get the answer I'm looking for so was hoping some guru could quickly chime in here
I have a 70 swb step I'm doing a full resto on and replacing my 350sb and 4 speed stump puller I have a complete lq4 down to the belts and wanted to go T56 and keep a manual transmission but Jesus they seem to be few an far between and cost an arm an a leg. Automatic isn't Somthing I really wanna do don't ask me why but it would really be a last resort to go 4l60e Is there a 5 speed equivalent that's more common and cheaper? Somthing that would be a fairly easy junk yard find until a t56 is in the budget? I know the trucks came in 5 speed but do they shift like a truck? I'd like to have Somthing that I could speed shift that wouldn't be like my stump puller which kind of feels like I'm driving an old school bus! Thanks for any input guys , my rear end is a 3:73 if that helps any Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Manual transmission options
When you say stump puller i want to assume 4wd... but i could be wrong, although lets assume it is do you plan on modifying a t56 to become 4wd since they are never offered that way except one company which is the people who make the lottery priced t56 tranzilla which i think is rockland or something

Re: Manual transmission options
Trucks a 2wd, I call it that because it has granny low which I can't even use with the 3:73 I end up starting in second

Re: Manual transmission options
Have you checked car-part.com because the t56 is pretty plentiful but what about the camaro or s10 t5 although im not sure how well they would holdbe up to a 6.0 abusing them

Re: Manual transmission options
Anything I've read says they won't bolt up, because I wondered about the camaro 3.8l 5 speed trans as well, so far the nv4500 is all I can find and the s10 nv3500 (supposedly week) but I can't see them being any better for shifting then my current 4 speed, however I would have 5 usable gears instead of 3 so that could be a bonus.
The T56 is just down right expensive and then clutch etc and that's befor I have a drive shaft made or fab a clutch setup. I paid 600$ for my complete lq4 swap with belts and ECM, were talking Canadian and low kilometers. I'm honestly thinking I could score a complete nv4500 with clutch etc for the same or less I just don't know if I would be happy with it, anyone else runnin them? Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Manual transmission options
I'm putting the Getrag from an early 90s chevy truck (aka nv3500) behind a 4.8. I picked the whole deal up for $300 including the master, slave, shifter...
Not a whole lot of knowledge on the swap. The newer nv3500 would've come factory behind a 4.8 so that's the easiest cheapest way by using all factory parts behind any lsx. Also the nv4500 but from what I read theyre very "truckish" but also very durable. I just started this thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=560307 Others I found helpful: http://www.v8s10.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=33573 http://www.v8s10.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=29060 http://www.ls1truck.com/forums/lsx-t...0-5-speed.html

Re: Manual transmission options
Thanks roost boy, I did alot of reading tonight and from what I read the nv4500 is geared low (grannie first) which I definitely don't want, the nv3500 is said to be weak but seems to be hit or miss some guys have good luck and run them on 38" tires and beat on them all day others look at them the wrong way and they explode, ill only be turning 27" tires at most and with my current open diff I doubt I'd have enough traction to break anything, my truck also doesn't weigh 4
Metric tons like some tho. All in all if one can be found cheap then I may go that route atleast it would give me Somthing to run and get all my slave figured out While I save for a T56, then it's just a matter of getting the clutch and flywheel to go with them Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Manual transmission options
Ok. Ironically, I am doing this very swap right now. I have a bit more in my swap, but that's not the point here. For the NV4500, you will be back in the same boat, with a 5.66 first gear ratio, you will have a useless gear. The T56 is one option. The TKO500 is another. Summit sells it for $2200. The thing you have to understand with the T56 is that shifter placement is critical to the room you have to work with in your cab...as the stock t56 shifter is all the way near the tail of the tranny...meaning you will have a lot of work ahead of you, unless you modify the whole tranny to accept the shifter point that is in the middle of the transmission....usually a $500 job...(requires breaking the entire tranny down).
Stay tuned for my build thread.

Re: Manual transmission options
Its all how you are going to run your truck, I am running an nv3500 from an 05, and an 02 5.3, but my truck is a 2wd with small tires, and i have beat on it more than a few times and it seems to be ok... 4200 miles on my swap so far, runs like a scalded dog and will boil the tires in the first three gears, the first gear is a little low though,

Re: Manual transmission options
Nacho what kinda gears are you running out back? An how low are we talking for first lol? I'm gonna have to call around and see what I can stir up for prices and what not on an nv3500, I'm lazy and don't wanna go pull one right now tho, we got 97cm of snow in the last two weeks of December and another 10 tonight and 20 this weekend so the scrap yards would be a pain in the ass

Re: Manual transmission options
The one I got I looked up and it said it has a 4.02 1st, and .73 5th gear, Im also running a rear end from a s10 which is supposed to have a 3:42 coupled with a 215 70 15 rear tire, it gets moving quickly..soon as I catch up on some things I'm gonna get some new wheels and tires and put a little more meat on it, I don't have a tach so I can't tell you what rpm I'm spinning at crusin, but in 5th doing 75 or so it doesn't sound like the motors working very hard so I think its in the 2500 rpm range. I bought mine off c/l before I read they were weak and undesirable, but then read a few other posts that guys like them, even one guy that has one behind 70 Chevy w/ a warmed up 350 and tows a travel trailer and hasn't had any problems, which I heard wasnt a good idea with the t56, since they were from cars, idk all info on the net, I plan on towing my jet boat with my truck once I get ac going. For what i paid for mine I can break 4 of them before I have the cost of a tko. So long story short if you find one for a good deal its worth a try,

Re: Manual transmission options
Roosterboy, did you use the flywheel from the early 90s tranny or from your gen3 engine?
I found a '98 NV3500 locally, which I want to replace the 4L60E that I currently have. |

Re: Manual transmission options
...and an "old style" clutch and a different throw out bearing. The details I found on an s10 forum somewhere. Just keep googling NV3500 lsx swap or something close to that and you'll find what you need

Re: Manual transmission options
About 200 miles on since the swap and got it inspected today. Love the trans! It's a truck and shifts like a truck. I did a stock 4.8 and the NV for a nice driver that I don't really rail on too hard. If you're going to slam gears and hammer on it, look to another trans! I think you could make one of these last a long time or break it in a weekend. Depends how you drive it!

Re: Manual transmission options
Do you have any pictures? Does your truck have a high hump floor? So you used a NV3500 and genIII flywheel. Did you need a crank spacer or did everything bolt right up? Which clutch assembly (NV3500 or genII) did you use?
