Cab tank installation help

I am trying to install my new in-cab tank into my truck. This is a retrofit because the PO had installed a rear under bed tank. I am ready to bolt it all in but I think I may be missing a part.

I know the the strap needs to be formed to go over the top of the tank, but how does it hook onto the bracket on the back wall of the cab. The hook on the strap is going the wrong way to hook it on and if the hook was going the other way the strap would be too short. Is this a case that the supplier send me the wrong part or am I missing other part of the strap assembly.

I can't help you, but I appreciate you posting this (with pics). My truck needs a new tank and I will be starting from scratch.

Who did you go with for the tank and sender? Price?

Unfortunately it looks like the PO removed most of the gas tank support welded to the floor.

I just removed my in cab tank to put my new tank from Boyd's under the rear - the straps don't have any sort of connector - they go down through the top against the back and fold back towards the sky on the front side - a little difficult to describe hopefully someone can post a picture - in this case a picture is worth a million dollars and it's pretty cut and dry.

Take the strap with the hook facing forward and slide it down thru the bracket on the back of the cab it hooks there then it bends over the tank and has about a 1 1/2" long bolts to bolt to tank bracket but make sure you put some rubber under the tank on the bracket and over the top where the strap will lay. I also took my tank out of my truck and ordered Boyds welding tanks for both projects we are working on at the moment I dont have a picture of the straps installed its very easy once you see how they go

the more I look at your picture I think your missing the part on the floor where it bolts thru take your tank out and take a picture for us you may be missing the pieces that should be on the floor of the cab

from the first picture it looks like the fwd flange has been bent down. Maybe to get it out of the way since the PO relocated the tank.

Looks like u got right straps--see pic of ones from Rock Auto below.

The back fastens by folding its very end back onto itself, then slides down thru rear hook, with the end toward front, of course; the crease holds it tight when you pull it back up against the hook.

If u need to lengthen overall, for whatever reason, buy a threaded rod from Lowes & cut it off to proper length. Also buy a "coupling nut" from them along with a 1.5--2.5 inch bolt--they might not be familiar with that "c/n" term, so see the pic of one below. In effect, this raises front floor attaching point to a height where strap will now bolt to (onto top end of coupling nut).

Thanks for all the input, I think I understand the assembly now.

In post #3 Whippinsaw posted pictures of his tank, but that must be an earlier truck with different mounting straps. Looks like his truck is a 60-63. His does not have the hook style straps like on my 66'

I will attach pics of my finished assembly for reference.

I got the tank and sender at a local car show at the Metrolina from a local truck parts vendor named Tommy's Pickup parts, he is out of Shelby, NC 704-482-0478.

I think I paid about $180 for the tank and about $25 for the sender, but I saved by not having to pay shipping on the huge tank. Oh, and the sender was complete with the float and filter sock. Some places sell that stuff separate to make more $$$.

OK, I think I remember the setup. I thought I had a picture of the area with the tank out and the straps in, but nope. So I'm going from memory here.

There is a bracket that is welded to the back wall of the cab. The "hooked" end of the strap slips down though until the end that's folded back over onto itself is past the bracket. Then pull the strap up with the hook catching the bracket per the drawing I rendered on my photo. Then bolt the other end to the bracket that's closest to the floor.

I hope this makes sense. Unfortunately, I think the pictures WhippinSaw posted are not the same as the 64-66 straps.

yes that is how they go I couldnt find a pic of mine with the tank out and the straps still there

That is exactly what I needed to see. Great input and pictures, Lugnutz65. The help on this forum is the best. I will try to finish my re-install this weekend. I will update with pics then. Many thankx

Ok guys, the new retro-fit tank has been installed in my 1966 C-10 project. I think it looks pretty good. The height of the gas cap past the rubber grommet came out with about 1/4" of neck showing, just what I was looking for. The dimension from the tank to the top of the neck was 12 1/4" not the 12 5/8" as specified in the assembly manual. I tried that assembly manual dim on the first trial fit and the neck stuck out too far for my taste.

Now on to the gas line and the wiring. Then I need to pull the rear tank and get rid of that. It was a new LMC kit tank that the PO installed. But, I like the in cab tank setup better, and now I can put my spare back under the bed where it should be as well.

Thanks for the comments, I am happy with the fit as well.

No, the straps and pads were ordered from LMC. Some of their parts lack the correct shape but these seemed OK.

Ok guys my gas tank retro-fit is complete and running in the 1966 C10 "Blackie". I finished making and hooking up the new gas line. The fuel gauge wiring I ran through some cloth loom I had laying around, not 100% original but it looks original and it will keep the wire from getting rubbed through on a sharp edge. The little clips that fit over the edge of the tank are just like the factory, I found them at Henry's Automotive Warehouse. He sells every automotive clip and fastener this is, check him out. Luckily the PO left the original gas line underneath and I just reattached my new fuel line to that as original.

The new rear tank the PO installed was removed, along with the rear fuel line extension (you can see it in one pic) and now I am ready to install my under bed spare tire rack.

It looks like heavy roofing paper, but not sticky, that might work in a pinch.

Very nice work. I was in the yard working on my truck today too. I wonder if anyone ever used rubber bicycle inner tubes to cushion the strap. Certainly not "factory" though. Haha!
