Chromed tailgate band

Has anyone ever had their tailgate band chromed? Would love to see a picture.

Re: Chromed tailgate band

Is that polished or chromed? Also, is that a refection or scratches in the band? Must be polished. Does not compair to your chrome bumper. Thanks for the picture.

Re: Chromed tailgate band

They told me it would discolor after awhile if you have it polished. Did yours?

Re: Chromed tailgate band

I polished mine on the 79, it faded again. I'm going to leave it off when I paint it. The newer style is available repop.

Re: Chromed tailgate band

I wonder if you could clear coat it so it would not fade after it got polished?

Re: Chromed tailgate band

Bruiser, the reason yours faded is because from the factory it is anodized so it does not fade but it still seems to any way after time. When you polishe it you take the factory anodize off so it has no protection. I was told if I had mine polished I would have to keep it up. Keep it polished. This is what I was told.

Re: Chromed tailgate band

Mine wasn't near as milky as some I've seen and it was still a ton of work. I used buffing wheels on a die grinder and tried several of the recommended polishes and still spent a weekend on it. I don't like it enough to keep that up. The truck looks fine without it.

Re: Chromed tailgate band

Someone told me to cut the coating off of it with muratic acid and sand it to get the discoloration off and I have sanding on mine for weeks. The only thing that happened to mine is it is shinny now instead of the brushed look. SO, I am going to paint the thing with silver urethane and clear coat it. I'm sure the paint will look just as good.

K5 is what I'd want, I was planning to move the handle inside anyway.

Ooops! I did not look good enough. I see that the handle indention is not there, so it will not work. I don't want handle inside of tailgate.

Re: Chromed tailgate band

They have ones for the pickups, but they are $600 or so dollars and mine is not dented at all, it was just discolored. So I am going to paint mine Silver Urethane with clear coat until they supply them cheaper.
