Re: 3 speed to four speed 4x4 trans swap questions
There was a slip yoke between the transmission and transfer case.

Re: 3 speed to four speed 4x4 trans swap questions
a 4sp 2wd drive shaft must have the slip joint you could cut down? good luck--

Re: 3 speed to four speed 4x4 trans swap questions
Which 4-speed will you be swapping in? it makes a difference. I suspect that an SM420 will bolt up to your existing bellhousing, but an SM465 will not due to the larger input bearing retainer diameter.
You will need are the upper and lower parts for the high-hump transmission cover... unless you already have the high hump? Plus shift boots, etc. You will have to have a small slip-shaft made to go between the fixed output yoke on your 4-speed to the fixed input yoke on the T-221. You'll be able to pull out and throw away all the three speed shift linkage. You could even swap out your steering column for a manual trans version with no shift mechanism. It should be a pretty straight forward swap to complete.

Re: 3 speed to four speed 4x4 trans swap questions
as of right now i'm not exactly sure what trans i'm going to be swapping into the truck wanted to see what problems i might run into before i did the swap.mainly all i want to do is keep the truck as original to the time period as i can and just put a vintage 4 speed into it so i can have the granny low.

Re: 3 speed to four speed 4x4 trans swap questions
In that case the easiest swap is the SM420 that all the 60s trucks came with. You should be able to get one really cheap because plenty of people are pulling them out when they install automatics.
