need help from the trim experts

my truck has the mustard color in the body trim. my question is did the wheel arch trim have the matching color or all black? 1977 cheyenne package

My 77 Sierra Classic wheel trim matches the body trim. I would assume yours would as well.

Correct. Wheel opening trim has yellow as well. 77 only.

Why did Chevy go from black to yellow? Also, why did they switch back?

What were people's comments who were building the trucks? Did they think it was cool that the switch was being made to have the yellow trim or did they think it was stupid?

I work in an auto manufacturing facility, and I can imagine the jokes that had to go on when the yellow trim came out.

Yes - all of the above.

Somebody in the Design Studio must have thought it looked cool and would be a nice mid-cycle enhancement. Then - after it was out on the streets - decided it no longer looked cool and they went back to black after one year.

Keep in mind these Studio designers are the "artiste's" of the auto industry. They are as fickle as fashion and have no discipline regrading program timing. (Usually. I generalize here to make a point). When we designed the Cadillac models a "clock" was a fashion accessory, not a time piece, to them.

When I designed the air cleaner for the GMT800 program I had a Studio consultant to make sure the air cleaner housing met the underhood appearance requirements. Prior to and without the benefit of his input I designed it with ribs which were "out", so that it would match the current engine cover. He had a hairy fit: "outsies" were out, and "insies" were in. So I redesigned the cover to have ribs that were "in". Well, before all was said and done "outsies" were in and "insies" were out, so I had to redesign the cover once again. Go out in the parking lot and look at a GMT800 or GMT900 version pickup and you'll see where we finally landed.

Fashion. It is a hard thing for this chassis/powertrain guy to grasp.

I will never understand "fashion".

I don't know if you can buy the yellow wheel arch trim but I remember a thread where someone painted the trim pieces to match. I'll see if I can find it.

Thanks much for that link. Am sure that paint will be easier to find than the yellow trim. Should not be too bad of a job to paint. Going to have to wait since spring has arrived we are going to have 6-9" of snow here in kansas city...no heated garage. Those yellow mouldings could be like finding chicken lips!

first off..good looking truck. I removed all of the side trim and filled in the holes prior to new paint, but wanted to replace the trim on the cab with new. All of the new stuff came as black, which was fine, but I also discovered that the tailgate "cheverolet" lettering was in yellow under the chrome cover. Found a local guy that did airbrushing, and for not a lot had him do the tailgate in black to match the rest. just my 2 cents... wheel trim might be a bit tougher as it is pretty flimsy off of the car. good luck

I would think any decent pinstriper could match and paint that yellow on the mouldings.
