How to move my truck

I just thought I would ask if anyone has used one of those car carrier trailers from Penske to move there SWB truck? I sold my house and am moving from NY to TN and wondered if the truck would fit one of these trailers so I could pull it behind the big Penske truck i rented. The other choice would be a transport company or Uship but I know that can get costly. If I could get my paperwork sorted out to get it registered I might even drive it!

Just a thought out of the box: it may be lots easier to get your paperwork sorted out by registering it in Tennessee--and then drive it.

Hmmm I may have to look into that. All I have is hand written bill of sale and a transfer of ownership form from NY. The original registration is long gone as the truck sat in several barns over the last 20 years.

get that sorted out before you leave, it would make it much easier for you to register and title in TN.

You would be better off to buy a car trailer and then resell it when you get there.

I've used a UHaul transporter to move my truck, and other vehicles for that matter, several times and never had a problem.

I have also used the uhaul car transporter for my swb and had no problems it barely fit but no problems, actually i might rent one this weekend i need tomove my truck to back to my house so i can work on it since its not driveable at the moment

You might just want to ship it. NY to TN should be under 800. I had mine shipped from AR to upstate NY, then went down and brought it back across the US/Canada border on a trailer. Yes, a LWB will fit on a trailer fine.

Sorry Jayoldschool, I just don't see a caddy towing a truck and trailer as the right way to do something. That is just me though. I guess you do what you have to do with the cards you're dealt.

Done both the U-haul trailer, another rental companies trailer, and my own personal trailer. In 1997, I moved from upstate NY back to Washington. U-haul was the cheapest and it went well. Trailers vary slightly between 1600~1900lbs depending on where it comes from and the manufacturer. My next trip was in 2000 with a U-haul. Two blow outs in the middle of Montana no-where-ville. Waited four hours for a response truck. Truck arrived with one tire, not two. Had to move it the next 100 miles to the nearest place to get a second tire put on. Sucked assests to say the least and then it got worse waiting 5 hours for a new tire. The shop ended up replacing all four tires out of safety concerns and needed approval from U-haul. In 2002, I used another companies rental trailer. Got 50 miles into Wyoming and an axle seized up. Response truck was one day away. Played the game of waiting, will never do that or use that company again. Bought my own trailer four years ago, and have not had one issue.

When the blow outs occurred in Montana with U-haul, the damage to my '65 was covered by U-haul. The violent blowouts caused lower door damage on the passenger side and one small linear dent on the door.

When the axle seized with the other company, they said the chains I used to secure my truck were not approved by them, but that is how the trailer was issued from the lease company. Thankfully there was no damage to my truck from that escapade.

Since I have owned my own trailer, I have not had one blow out, no axle issues, no brake issues, and no lighting issues. My trailer now is not the most glamorous or ideal candidate for cars, but it works great and my truck fits.

Consider all options before just jumping and getting a rental trailer. Read the policies and get the additional insurance if you value your truck. Contact a vehicle hauler and get a quote. They are insured, and you aren't paying extra for that. Also look into if you have to take it to a parking lot, or the transporter will come to you.

My best advice would be, if you have the right vehicle to tow your truck and trailer, you can do ok with renting a trailer. I did it three times for long distance and at least 5 times for local moves for friends. It is easy and painless with the right tow vehicle. Also, some companies will not rent to you unless you have a 3/4-ton or 1-ton vehicle.

That Caddy has 7000lb tow rating. It has a 260HP/335ft-lb LT1 V8. Oil and trans coolers. 3.73 gears. Electric brakes. Air bags in the rear springs. The same 4L60E and 8.5" ring gear ten bolt used in trucks. It has a full perimeter frame, and a longer wheelbase than that LWB 65 on the trailer. Just because it looks like a car doesn't mean that it can't pull like a truck

Thanks for all the opinions and ideas, not sure what i am going to do other than I have reserved a 22' truck for the stuff in my house and garage and may pull a trailer behind it if dmv throws me a curve ball. Of course I have to get a few things done before its road worthy. I will check on a shipper as well that would be less stressful but more money!

In 2011, I used a Penske truck & vehicle trailer when I moved from PA to NC just because I worked for them at the time.

That being said, the computer system could not tell us if a 1966 SWB would be OK on the trailer. If the computer can't match to the vehicle being carried, no rental. I ended up calling my truck a 76 Nova to make the transaction possible. I am sure that if damage occurred, I would have been screwed, employee or not.

Hauled my 64 short step all over the state of Arizona on a U-Haul trailer....never had a problem and it towed like a dream.

Overheard at many U Haul rental counters:

"Umm, a 93 Honda Civic"

One more thing to remember is that our trucks are very light compared to modern vehicles. Even many small cars weigh more than a 60-66 truck. The new Camaro is almost 1000lbs more!

Unless you have plates for that truck Uhaul will not rent you a trailer.

Just my opion, but I moved all 4 of my trucks from southern cal to northern cal, with my own trailer that I bought just for the move, I tried to rent a trailer but it would have cost me almost as much to move all 4 trucks as it did to buy one, but I did find it in craigs list, for 2500.00 brand new 18' with dual axle, this is what I would suggest for you, but make sure you have the correct vehicle for towing, I used my company truck because that was I had it was a 1/2 ton I would not suggest using a 1/2 ton I have towed lots of stuff over my 30yrs of driving so I knew what I was getting into when I did it, but not really suggesting any try that. its a hand full with no brake set up on my truck to handle the extra weight, and going dow the grape vine in southern cal was fun with a fulley loaded two trucks with a 65 3/4 sitting on a the trailer. any how if you have the right set up you should have no proble.

U-Haul will work just fine.. Those trailers are built like a tank.. You wont break it.

Here is my 70 LB on a uhaul trailer.



Fit just fine, hauled it home 300 miles like that, I drove the 70 up to buy the 2000, threw it on the trailer and towed it home.

Now I have this setup:

it is a 20' all steel car hauler trailer, I added a winch to it.



For all I am doing it works out awesome. so easy loading a dead vehicle with the winch.

Id say if you can afford it buy your own trailer, you will find a use for it because it will open so many doors, if not, rent the uhaul.

Hauled my 64' fleetside 250 miles behind my friends 02' Ford 3/4 ton 4x4 and it fit fine and pulled great.I always look over the trailer I am renting.U haul trailer worked great.

Well if all you are concerned with is cost , then I have to recommend my cure all ..A tow bar ....I have owned mine since high school and our old trucks are about the only vehicles you can tow with them... Heck I made my first one ..just pull the drive shaft and be gone.. that is how I got my 63 from Maine to Michigan ,(behind a 24' Ryder truck, 1000 miles ) and it is how I got my latest 63 from Illinois to Michigan 450 miles..,..... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=447136

Maryville area, actually Seymour TN is where we rented a place. Our closing here is mid April so I am getting things figured out and trying to get the truck back together as well.


I thought about a tow bar as well or a tow dolly.

Tow bar will get it there as long as the engine is in it , some times having them sit so high in the front messes up the geometry and the wheels wont track right ...
