floor or column

What do you guys use. A floor shifter or column shifter. I have a 56 chevy pickup and was trying go figure out which way to go. I have the floor shifter right now and will be upgrading to a new steering column. Thanks guys show some pics if you can.

The only thing I don't like floor shifters on trucks is that they can be inconvenient when you have three people riding in the seat a lot. If you are prone to taking two buddies with you on a regular basis I'd vote for the column shift.

If I had an automatic in my 48 I'd almost think about running a stock column and column 3 speed shifter converted to shift the automatic and flipped so I could shift it with my left hand. Back in the 50's and early 60's it was popular with young guys to flip the shift lever to the left side of the wheel so they could shift gears with their arm around their girlfriends and not have to move their arm to shift. After being married almost 44 years I'm long past having my wife sit that close to me running down the road though.

I like the floor space, even with buckets, so column is my vote.

If you stay with the stock column and cut it down using a lower bearing kit you'd save on buying a steering column, floor and dash mounts. (Chassis Chevy Trucks has the conversion bearing). http://www.classicparts.com/1947-59-.../#.UU-DKr_XdMJ

All you'd have to buy is the floor shifter.

Of course its all personal preference and ergonomics .

I have a Hurst floor shifter in my 57 now but only because I couldn't figure out an auto shifter for the stock column. Someday when I do the Mustang II front end I will go to an early chevy van tilt column with the key on the dash, I will then need to figure out how to shrink my stock steering wheel down to keep that look.

Originally had a three on the tree. Then a 4 speed on the floor. Then an auto with shift on the floor plus tranfer case lever. This time moved the shift column back to the column, got tired of middle person, usually a child, kicking the shift out of gear (shifter did not have a neutral lock out). Transfer levers lock in place so no problem there.

I have a floor shifter on mine (th350 & rachet shifter) that i utterly despise. I will be going to a collum shifter when i get around to it.
