reverse makes a loud bang

is it fairly normal for the reverse gear in a th350 to make a loud bang when it goes into gear? my stepdad's k20 did the same thing as my k10 but he did not have any problems with the tranny up til he sold it

Re: reverse makes a loud bang

Find out if the bang is from the diff or the trans

My freinds banged when he shifted into gear. More so in reverse. The spider gears and center chart in the diff were so warn they were about to let go.

You can tell if you have a buddy look under and watch the driveshaft move a hole bunch when you go from D to R plus you hear it.

Re: reverse makes a loud bang

Check your u-joints in the rear end.... sloppy u-joints can make a nasty banging when going into reverse.

Re: reverse makes a loud bang

Yeppers, differential will do it. My truck is full-time 4wd, and it's my front diff that goes "clunk" when shifting into reverse.

I haven't torn into mine yet. Of all the things that could possibly be wrong in there (worn/broken teeth on the ring or pinion, bad spider gears, ect ect) is there any culprit that is more likely than others?

It's a D44 front, and it's DEFINITELY clunking in the front diff. It's not a U-joint.
