Mirror Glass Replacement

Has anyone had any luck replacing mirror glass? I know I should be asking a glass shop but I thought I'd check here.. Plus I can show off my $5.24 + $11.65 shipping offset mount mirror off of Ebay. Was listed as "Vintage truck side mirror"

Re: Mirror Glass Replacement

I own a classic F**D car. I went to a glass shop but they would not install regular mirrored glass in the door mirror. Something about the reflection and the laws about what type of mirror it had to be. So I went to the local O'Reillys and bought a pre-packaged replacement mirror that had enough mirror to do two door mirrors. The glass shop then used that mirror to cut a new piece for my door mirror. Sorry for the long explanation.

Nice offset mirror by the way!

Re: Mirror Glass Replacement

We own a glass shop and have cut plenty of side mirrors before. Never have heard that its illegal to use plain mirror? The passenger side mirrors are slightly convex but the drivers side is usually plain flat mirror.

I don't see anywhere in the GM parts book in the 1970 or the 1972 print books for a different part number for that 5" mirror head? They had different versions like the silver 68 up style but nothings about pass or drivers side use. I wonder if they are all slightly convex but either way a new flat mirror glass in a restored head would look awesome. Mark

Re: Mirror Glass Replacement

great find at a great price. i have several of these off set mirror heads, and they are getting harder to find. i also have a few that could use new glass as the mirror surface was wearing. the only problem i see is that it has a pressed edge that holds the glass in. i dont see how you would remove the glass and get a new piece the same size installed. if you do figure it out though, please let me know. the only option i saw was to break the glass and install a smaller piece that i just dont think would look good. i think they probably replaced the entire mirror head when the glass broke.

Ah, I shoulda said that most newer cars have flatter/convex glass. I haven't checked an original round mirror to see what they have. Sorry about the confusion.

I was planning on cutting a mirror slightly smaller for mine, then use black silicone to hide the gap. We have a circle cutter to get the glass as round as possible to minimize the gap and uneven edges.

Re: Mirror Glass Replacement

1963-10 Yeah sorry, I should have posted that # when I looked that up.
Astronaut: I too would be interested in seeing the finished product. I have several off set stud mirrors that look like 47 some year olds in the glass appearance and the reflection too looks even worse when I look at it!

Re: Mirror Glass Replacement

I still need to find a second mirror head before I restore the one I have- I'm going to paint then with flattened single stage urethane and the sheen won't match if I do them at different times. I'll go ahead and get the first one ready to paint though to speed up the process.

Re: Mirror Glass Replacement

We can get convex mirror to cut passenger side mirrors so they'll have a wider viewing range like newer cars have. They are pre-cut replacement mirrors for newer cars but we can cut them down to fit the truck mirrors.

Re: Mirror Glass Replacement

Thanks to all for the information.. I get so side-tracked on little detail items when I should be focused on getting my cab set back on the frame...
