H.E.I. distributor

Do I need to move my engine forward to run the H.E.I. distributor on my 66 ?

Most times, no- although it will be snug back there, it should fit without moving the engine forward.
This is assuming you have a V-8, LOL!

If you're running a small block that's still sitting in the stock location, you'll be fine. Big Block, I'm not too sure. I would say no on the BBC.

Mine is a tight fit, but no mods to the firewall and there is about 1/2" gap between firewall and cap.

Ed, I'm running a Mallory HEI and it it tight, but fits. I would buy a small body if I had to do it over.

If you are running an auto, either 700r4/th350/200r4, most aftermarket trans mounts are made overseas and are shorter than the originals or if you are using the original it has compressed over the last fifty years, if you use a quarter inch spacer under the rear trans mount it will effectively move the rear of the block away from the firewall, the HEI will fit with no issues.

It will fit, as long as you have number one in the right location the coil won't hit the firewall..

If you go with the mini, you will need to mount the coil somewhere.

All your online speed shops have them. Its all up to your budget.

Why waste money on the mini when a standard HEI will fit fine. Consider that you can buy a standard HEI cap and rotor anywhere for about 12 bucks! Be smart..

Glad you raised this question. I was considering the same thing.was looking at Dinos clean build with a hei. looks like the motor was forward a little. if not looked like there was good clearance?

I have never had an issue with running a HEI distributor in a small block in the stock location. It is a little close, and you have to remove the cap and rotor to R&R it, but it will certainly fit with no problems.

Thank you all for the info ! I'm glad to know this is not going to be an issue.I bought these tube style mounts as I understood they move the engine ahead slightly to allow for more firewall clearance (as well as header clearance).

I'm a little reluctant to use these motor mounts as the frame will need some mods to accept them and cutting into the frame rails has me a little more than nervous.

Has anyone got an opinion on this ? Do I loose any structural integrity by removing a 1/2 inch of top frame about 5 inches long ?

Here is a pic supplied by the manufacturer and another from this site of the frame modified to accept these style mounts.

There is far more material removed here than what I would end up removing by the manufactures supplied pic,I would be more inclined to modify based on the other where the frame is notched only where it needs,however it does concern me that this may weaken the frame.Just for the record...,I will be in the 430 trq/450 hp range with my 383.

Look forward to all of your input on this.
