Fuel filter location with External pump
Hello guys and gals, Plumbing my fuel system with an External pump and wanted to know if I should put the filter before or after the fuel pump. It is a return style fuel system without the corvette style regulator. Thanks Daniel.

Re: Fuel filter location with External pump
Ideally you want one before and one after, but a lot of people don't run the pre-filter. You want about a 100 micron pre-filter before the pump and a regular high pressure filter after the pump. I have omitted the pre-filter in the past, but on the trucks I know I am going to be driving a lot, it's cheap insurance, since a small amount of crud can quickly ruin a fuel pump.

Re: Fuel filter location with External pump
I have currently a 40 micron filter after the pump planned, I am using all AN -6 fittings in my fuel system. I can see if they make a 100 micron filter with AN fittings, thanks Daniel.

Re: Fuel filter location with External pump
I don't bother with a pre filter, just because it can be annoying finding reasonably priced fuel filters in a variety of micron sizes, AN sizes, AND FI pressure rated.

Re: Fuel filter location with External pump
This is what I'm using for my pre-filter. You can get adapters for for the AN -6 lines.

Re: Fuel filter location with External pump
I have the cheap clear plastic pre-filter on mine and the C5 filter inline is mounted on the frame about 1/2 way between the pump and engine.
Haven't had an issue yet. Definitely run a pre-filter. I found out the hard way that the inline pumps don't like junk running thru them. Cost me about $200 to fix what a $4 pre-filter could have avoided. |

Re: Fuel filter location with External pump
I'm curious tho; are the low pressure fuel filters really ok for use as pre filters?
Sure its not on the pressure side, but wound't there still be some vacuum/suction pressure that might be a problem for a plastic filter?

Re: Fuel filter location with External pump
I've done it on 3 swaps now and haven't had an issue. I was concerned on the first but had a bunch of gunk in the fuel system that I couldn't get rinsed out of the tank so a high $ filter wasn't really an option plus I was backed up on a show date so had to make it move...still running today about 3 years later.
It doesn't suck THAT hard...insert wife comment here.

Re: Fuel filter location with External pump
I tried a regular filter as a pre-filter once and it was too restrictive. It was a metal one and not the clear plastic so there might be a difference there.
Here's what I'm running now. 100 micron, with cleanable element, and made in the USA! I don't think you'll find a more reasonable price on one it was $27 plus shipping. http://www.robbmcperformance.com/products/filters.html

Re: Fuel filter location with External pump
I don't run a pre-filter either, but often thought about adding one.....my filter/reg is mounted on the outside of the frame rail under the passenger seat to keep it away from the exhaust....

I'm having to re-do the suction side of my fuel system anyways so I decided to give one a shot. My pump is kind of noisy, I'll report back if it quiets down at all with the new filter. |

Re: Fuel filter location with External pump
That's about the exact same location as mine too.
