Possible wiper motor problem on my '65?
Guys,
I'm wondering if anyone else has dealt with this issue. On my '65, the wiper motor still works ( it's a single speed motor ), but the wiper blades don't stop in the same location each time. Sometimes, depending on how I adjust them, they'll travel off the sides of the windshield. Or they'll slam the bottom of the windshield weatherstrip if they're adjusted too far down. I've looked into the Newport Eng. wiper motor as a replacement, but I'm wondering if this will even correct this issue. Also, would a o.e. type replacement motor from one of the vendors work as a suitable replacement, being that they're $100.00 or so cheaper than the Newport motors? Thanks in advance for any help!!

Re: Possible wiper motor problem on my '65?
Some of the original trico wiper heads had adjustments that allowed you to adjust the angle of the blades on the arms. I will try and get pics. The trico's I have now are from the early 60's, but don't have the head adjustment. I have the original tricos that came off my 63 (just need to repolish the stainless steel) and they do have the head adjustment on them.
I don't think the motor is your issue. Even with the current arms/heads that I have, if the windshield isn't very wet, there is some drag on the arms(especially the pass side) and it will hang about 1/2". If its good and raining out, they both return to the full rest position. Just my experience with them.

Re: Possible wiper motor problem on my '65?
Thanks for the reply! Actually, I have the arms with the adjustable heads already on the truck. I was doing some further investigating this evening and found that there is about 5" worth of play at the very outer tip of both blades. In other words, you can move either blade through it's travel about 5" total, which makes me think that the problem is too much play in either the wiper arm pivots or the wiper linkage. Is this a common issue with these trucks?

If you find that you are in need of a new wiper motor, I would suggest just replacing it with an original style wiper motor. You could at that time upgrade to a 2 speed with the washer. However you will need a different switch and the upgrade wiring.

Re: Possible wiper motor problem on my '65?
The wiper arm linkage is bolted directly to the motor. There are no bushings or anything really to wear out. I think its a combination of getting the arms installed with correct adjustment and then fine turning with the head adjustment. My wiper heads almost touch when at rest. Rarely do wiper issues pop up as the systems are fairly simple. And as Captain fab said, always a good time to do an upgrade if you have to replace.

Re: Possible wiper motor problem on my '65?
Thank you guys both for your replies!!
I'll tinker with it some more and try readjusting the heads to see if I can make any improvements. I have considered adding a 2-speed motor, but don't know how much besides wiring is involved. I realize that the switches are different, also. Is the wiring to the wiper motor a separate harness or is it all tied into the main harness under the dash?

Re: Possible wiper motor problem on my '65?
I am personally not familiar with the 65 wiring....and hopefully a member can chime in on that. As far as the motor, it is a direct fit for the non-washer option and your correct on the switch. It does take a different switch that is also a direct fit. I know the wiring on my 63 is a little different than the 64-66 and is also different from the 60-62. In 63, the washer harness became a separate harness.

Re: Possible wiper motor problem on my '65?
In the '64-'66's all the wiper motor to switch wiring is part of the under dash harness. The '63 and earlier had a seperate harness for the 2 speed with washer upgrade. This harness is available from the aftermarket for about $20.00 and could be used on your truck easily.

Thanks for the replies, guys!
Captainfab, are you saying that a '63 harness will plug into my harness, as far as adding a 2-speed motor goes? Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Possible wiper motor problem on my '65?
The add on harness does not plug into your original harness. It simpley connects to the 2 speed with washer wiper switch. And the other end connects to the 2 speed with washer wiper motor. You will also need to connect your original wires for the single speed wiper.
Here is the harness: http://www.classicparts.com/1963-65-...ctinfo/52-875/
