1986 4speed to automatic swap question

OK i thought i would like the manual in my 86 c10 longbed. turns out this thing is loud obnoxious and nobody wants to service it. its not too fun to drive because it fights you back really hard. im an experienced standard trans driver loved my 5 speed 91 k1500. this thing doesnt like to be shifted quickly. In Wichita traffic sometime you gotta but with this trans i get no where fast. i imagine it would be awesome for towing but none of that i use this truck for. I know lokar makes a floor shifter for the th350 th400 and 700r4. does anyone know if i can utilize the stock hole in the floor with it? i have seen them on ebay pretty cheap. there is a local guy here that has stock of rebuilt th350s 400s and 700r4s the th350 and th400 are 450 a pop and the 700r4 650 a pop. heres some pics so you guys know the exact location of the shifter.

Im having the 700r installed in my 74 step side, i have the 4 speed as well. I believe the shop told me lokar shifter would line up, thats what he wants to install. Hopefully we can start the install next week.

If you go with the swap, you can recoup most of your money by selling the hydraulic clutch parts and bellhousing. They are very desireable and hard to come by.

I have a np435 in my old ferd. I love mine but I can understand why the wide ratio doesn't suit how and where you drive.

Re: 1986 4speed to automatic swap question

Don't get me wrong I would like to keep it manual but I wanna put a lot of horses under the hood and I never tow with it. But my thing is this trans sucks for a daily driver and i can't use reverse when I put my sons car seat in the middle it's not a comfortable ride for him regardless. Stop and go traffic makes things interesting also. I can't wait till I come along some one with a 95-98 z71 ext cab under 200k that'd be willing to trade for now ill stick to my plans if building an old school long bed hot rod

Re: 1986 4speed to automatic swap question

If you liked the manual in your 91 k1500. Why not find a nv3500 or 5LM60 from one and put that in instead of the auto. Seems like it'd be a lot less work then swapping.

but.... i can fit a car seat and if i can use the floor shifter it will be as simple as removing the clutch pedal and swapping the trans. IF..... i can use the stock floor hole. thats why i made this post cause i couldn find anyone that had done it before

lots of IF just testing the water on this swap

i read in a post that the lokar was adjustable. it being cable driven instead of linkage it looks like you have alot of flexibility when it comes to mounting it. just nervous throwing alot of money at something you havent seen done before

Re: 1986 4speed to automatic swap question

just dropped my 74 off at the shop to install the 700r with the lokar shifter. i asked him if it was a direct bolt in. he said he thought it might be close but wouldnt know till later, might have to trim it in the back. going to put a trans cooler in front instead of tying it in to the radiator. hopefully by monday ill have it back then i can give a full report.
