66 deluxe heater core swap

Going to swap my heater core this weekend. Coolant was filling up in the bottom of the fan motor so I figured the core was shot. Any tips, suggestions to this? I've searched numerous forums and sites and can't seem to find a good step by step. Thanks,

99% of the time its your control valve not the core but if the core is bad, replacing it is pretty straight forward. Is your fan motor in the engine comp or in the cab?

If its in the engine comp and you have a 3 lever control panel then it is a deluxe. Start from the top and work your way down. Remove the fresh air intake then the cover - like I said its pretty stright forward. I've got pics of mine in various stages, let me know and I'll post them.

Get er done this morning. Not too bad. A couple of observations:

With hindsight being 20/20, I would remove the whole box off the firewall first and the do the swap. I started to remove all those tiny sheet metal screws first and then forgot about those two nasty little bolts on the firewall inside the cab. Once I got it out it was very simple. I reassembled it off the truck and then mounted the whole box. Much easier going back on than off.

The Deluxe Heater Core from LMC is a nice solid unit. I did run into only one snag with it. The inlet/outlet copper tubes were wider and spaced a bit differently than the old stock one I removed. A few minutes with a grinding tool and my Dremel and the housing were the tubes slip into were widened to accept the new core. The last one had those c-lips in the housing but they were not attached. Was able to reattach those so it is mounted nice and snug.

While I was messing around under there, I also replaced the water neck with a nice new solid aluminum one with O-ring gasket from Jegs. Added a bit of gasket sealer stuff too just to be sure. Topped of the coolant, let it run to get air bubbles out and took it for a spin. No more leaks from the core or the water neck. Let it cool down and topped off the coolant once more..

So one project down, and quite a few more to go. Next up, in cab fuel tank replacement. Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. You all helped this novice wrench turner gain some confidence.

This isn't too bad either- two people make it easier as well as removing the seat.
