Intake Ducting
What are people using for intake ducting and air filters in your swaps? Throttle body and both sides of the MAF appear to be different sizes, does that make it a pain? Anything I should stay away from?
2003 cable driven 5.3 in a 49 Chevy pickup is what I'm working with.

Re: Intake Ducting
Buy a generic cold air intake kit for a similar year silverado. It will have the filter, maf adapter and the alum tubing in it for about $69. It comes in two pieces with an elbow and a straight coupler. Out of those pieces you can fit a short air intake for pretty much any swap.
Take a look at the early pages of my engine swap in my build I have it shown from plenty of angles.

Re: Intake Ducting
I bought my CAI from spectre which makes three models for LS engines in 69-72 trucks. You can see mine in this video, as well as the link to spectre.

Re: Intake Ducting
I've always wandered if anyone has been oiling the Generic filters like the K&N's??? I've been running my ebay intake for a while now, but never oiled it.

Re: Intake Ducting
When I got mine, and when I really really wash it out, I'll lightly oil it and let it sit around for a day. You really only want a tiny bit of oil to keep the element from drying out and getting brittle.
Read the box though, many of the new ones are designed not to be oiled, since many people have never oiled a filter at all.

Re: Intake Ducting
Along these lines, has anyone just put a cone filter right off of the maf? Seems like there would be more air getting to it then behind the engine bay.

I meant battery tray not engine bay. Got a little distracted.

Re: Intake Ducting
My battery has been moved to the rear, so the air comes right through the venting onto the filter, which sits right behind the old battery spot.
My filter is right off the MAF, did you mean Filter& Maf right off the TB?

Re: Intake Ducting
Yeah sorry. Right off of the maf. I would think the air coming from the fans would be cooler even though it runs through the radiator first. As opposed to air that is more stagnant off to the side. If the battery was relocated that would change things but mine is stock.

Re: Intake Ducting
Thanks guys, keep the ideas coming. I did end up ordering the $69 ebay one, though I'm not fond of the red or the blue.

Re: Intake Ducting
I'm just sticking the filter on the throttle body for my first go-round and running speed density (so no MAF plumbing to worry about). I'm using a Spectre P4 cone filter. Once I get it up and running (still a work in progress right now), I'll see what temperature the air readings are, and if they're higher than I'd like, I'll see about relocating it.

Re: Intake Ducting
I believe the Silicon is shiny and the rubber is well...not shiny. the Silicon will maybe hold up to excessive heat a bit more too.

Re: Intake Ducting
I looked into it a bit more and it shouldn't be a problem to run those three right in a row but it was suggested to me that I purchase a Saxon PC honeycomb element to put into the maf to reduce turbulence and erratic readings. I should have the engine running in a week or two so I'll be sure to post my findings here.

Real silicone has a bit of sheen to it when its used for the couplers etc. It won't have the same texture as rubber. That "tacky" feeling that radiator hoses etc have is indicative of rubber.

Re: Intake Ducting
I just stuck my spectre silicone 4" coupler right to the maf with no problems. Probably not ideal for race applications but it held fine for me without any major bunching in any particular area.
