Timing or carb ?
The issue I'm having is when I hit the gas of idle it bogs down and little backfire from carb. I thought it was timing then I heard it could also be idle mixture screws running to lean. I know it used to diesel and one loud backfire after shutting off but not anymore till I retarded the dist a little but with this I'm not sure about this one.

Re: Timing or carb ?
Have you set up a heat supply to your intake?

Re: Timing or carb ?
Nice!
Got a pic of it set up to run? So when it bogs is the motor full warmed up? |

Re: Timing or carb ?
the black hose behind radiator hose is feed from thermostat and the black hose against the firewall is the return. Yes usually it's warmed up when it happens.

Re: Timing or carb ?
I ran the one on mine different. THe feed line off the pump went to the heater core. The return from the heat core looped behind the motor then thru the plate and back in to the thermo housing. I got fairly instant heat that way.
Your set up is likely dead heading and not flowing well. You'll have warm hoses but not good circulation. THe plenum of your intake never fully warms up causing the lean bog. |

Re: Timing or carb ?
So run the hoses better and let warm up longer then I shouldn't have these issues ?

Re: Timing or carb ?
Easy to change your hose routing.
If it's heating better after you change them when you start your motor you should feel some heat in the hose coming from the core fairly quickly. Once you're happy you have good flow and heat then it should run better. THen you can tweek your timing and carb. I see your pcv hooked into the side of your valve cover. That hole in the cover is normally where air is supplied to the crankcase so the pcv that's mounted at the back of the cover can pull crankcase vapours out of the motor. You likely don't have a baffle in there. Could be pulling a little oil into your motor. And the breather just above the pcv doesn't help either. It short circulates the air needed for the pcv to work. |

Re: Timing or carb ?
I hear ya'!
Never fear! There are options. THey make pcv grommet/baffles that you could use and keep your pcv where it is. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/search...query=720-9359 And you could use a breather at the front that has no breather holes. Just a cap. |

Re: Timing or carb ?
Thanks a bunch. So again I get the baffled grommet for side PVC get a chrome cap for front of valve cover and keep the breather in back correct

Re: Timing or carb ?
Sounds good!
You can cheat a bit with that front breather since it matches your back one. Might be you can plug it. Some have a metal piece in the inside that you can tap closed. Kudo's on your good lookin' motor! However if you'd like to keep it lookin' nice look into moving your fuel filter down by the pump and run a steel tubing line for your fuel. If you get a leak in that rubber line you'll have a real fire on your hands. |

Re: Timing or carb ?
As long as you feel heat in the hose it's got to be better.

Re: Timing or carb ?
Another problem rears it's head.
You got too much fuel pressure. Max is 5.5 lbs. It's flooding. You might need a regulator. I'd fix the carb flooding first and leave the heat plate hoses alone for now. |

Re: Timing or carb ?
I got like 6-6.5 psi that's to high. So that's causing bogging and backfire through carb. I'm so freakin frustrated.

Re: Timing or carb ?
Fun isn't it!!
Hang in there, perfection takes time. If you think setting one carb is fun, you should try running two. I needed only 4 lbs for 2 of them. I used a regulator like this. Not the best but it worked. You wanted to run a new tubing fuel line. Put a reg on with it. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/search...uery=560-58500 |

Re: Timing or carb ?
Just checked the online manual for the performer carbs. While 5.5 psi is the recommended fuel pressure, 6.5 is the specified max. So your 6-6.5 should be fine, assuming the carb is in good shape. Are you getting a bunch of black exhaust when it bogs? If so, probably rich, otherwise you are likely lean.
Does it recover from the bog and run ok at speed? If so, try changing the accelerator pump setting. Or you may need a different set of power piston springs. |

Re: Timing or carb ?
There's no black smoke. And after the bog and the backfire through carb it's pretty good.
And I bought a regulator awhile back I didn't put it on was going to return it. It's the mr gasket one Posted via Mobile Device |
