Inaugural run this morning

So I FINALLY got my truck tagged the other day and decided this morning that I just had to drive it to work. It's been since 2009 since it's really seen much of the road and I live 5 miles from where I work anyway, so I figured, what the heck!

I didn't have any troubles and she ran like a dream. The only curious thing is, it's 36 degrees out this morning so I wasn't planning on it warming up quickly at all in that short of a time period. It kinda hung out at 130-ish for most of the way, and then on the last mile, sped up to 210 before dropping down to 180 where it should be. I know most people wouldn't mind that at all, but man, it bugs the hell out of me. I have always been plagued with bad luck when it comes to the cooling system. My coolant is full, it has a brand new 180 degree thermostat, new water pump, and the radiator is a behemoth aluminum 4 core. I have a fan shroud and the fan is set in the proper placement in regards to the shroud. (I would post pics to prove it, but I am at work and the company I work for blocks everything, especially site like photobucket and flicker )

I'm just wondering what else it could be. It almost seems like there is an air bubble trapped somewhere. Maybe I am just being over-aware. It's just nerve-wracking to see it climb higher than the thermostat is rated for and not knowing if it's going to stop. Know what I mean?!

i know exactly what you mean........ you have the feeling it is going to keep going up til it damages something..... glad you had a good ride into work ... i know u are looking forward to quittin' time so you can jump back in and fire it up.

Hahaha. Exactly! I was all talking to it like...hey now, what are you doing? Don't do that, stop it.

I am even taking the day off work early to head to the salvage yard to pick up another 65 grille and other miscellaneous parts that I could store.

Prolly as simple as a bit of sticky in the new stat or an air bubble in the system....burped and then dropped to cruising temp. 210 is not too hot for a pressurized system in good condition/properly mixed in any event. Run it around a bit, get some highway time to make sure the air is burped out of it and the stat is cycling. Its prolly gonna be like all engines and might read a bit hotter than the stat rateing due to:

actual temp at the sender location, hard running, outside air temps, water pump condition, etc.

Sounds like yer up for some validation driving and a few tweeks then down to some serious cruizing.

My vote is for the air bubble. Only way to get rid of em is to burp, either by a t fittin in the heater hose at the highest point or my way....some highway time!

Im with Sharps on the air bubble. Just drive it and keep an eye on the gauge.

Mine does the same. I checked the temp then the hose and wait for thermostat to open and it settles at 180. Just a few seconds above 180 and the flow is good. My sender is next to neck and old mechanical gauge.

I know how you feel the 305 in my 66 3/4ton is a little on the hot side. maybe because its a 305 v8 in such a large truck? but I finally got the electric fan switch replaced so maybe she will be a little better. need to find a fan shroud though or fab one? Nice to find someone else in the Sin City area by the way!

Thanks for the input everyone. I am glad that it's more common than I thought. I agree, I do need to get it out on the interstate and let it breathe and stretch out a bit. That will be the true test. It's funny, I know that people drove these things all over the country and these suckers were built to last, but I also get a bit timid taking in on the interstate with the lack of overdrive. Guess I just need to man it up and just do it. hahaha. If something breaks, we fix it and keep going!

I say just run it more and watch that gauge.... Hell I've been driving my truck for almost a year (9 year project) and I still get those feelings in the back of my mine that something is gonna fail.. but in reality she purrs and runs great every time!!
