Dual alternator setups?

I've got a lot of amp sucking goodies on my square and I'm looking for a way to power them! I have a brand new alternator that's been sitting on a bench for a couple years now and an idea popped into my head today. Anyone seen any clever dual alternator setups? I've already got a power master 1 wire. The other ones a three wire, so I'm not worried about wiring it up, just mounting. It's a non serpentine setup, no a/c long water pump, and currently my alternator is mounted the high mount passenger side style. And ideas, pics or advice will be greatly appreciated. Not looking to spend a bunch of money so those fancy billet kits are out of the question. Thanks in advance!

Re: Dual alternator setups?

Haven't seen any dual alt setups, though I do remember seeing a swap to use a later model, high output alt.

I'm kinda like duct tape- no real purpose, but handy to have around.

Re: Dual alternator setups?

^^x2, never seen dual alts either. i think it would be easier to go dual battery's with a big honking alternator.

Re: Dual alternator setups?

You might be able to put a 2nd one where the AC compressor would normally sit. If you currently have a 2 belt setup, you would need to get a 3 belt pulley set from a local pull a part place. The AC belt normally catches the PS pump as well.

Re: Dual alternator setups?

You'd probably be a lot better off just going with a single alternator that puts out more power and is more efficient. Take a look at Polar Power. And one of those $230 XS power batteries.

Re: Dual alternator setups?

The 6.2 diesel in certain trucks have dual alternators, 454 ambulance applications also had dual alternators. Checks/ auto parts store and they can tell you what years apply.

Re: Dual alternator setups?

Agree with above suggestions that easiest way would be to use single high output alternator. Have run duals, k30 and they were a problem even when factory installed. Making a setup from other chevy applications is possible, however, lots of work, e.g. Getting the right pulleys and making it all work will take some time.
Aftermarket high outputs are pretty good, only look different from original.

Re: Dual alternator setups?

If you are running a GM style serpentine kit, I designed a bracket kit to use an aux. Alt. where the smog pump originally mounted.....thus giving you 220A total if you use the GM counter replacement alts. However, I would suggest a dual battery setup since you could easily support such a system then.

Re: Dual alternator setups?

Tdubby...remind me what motor you have in your truck. I can look at different serpentine setups and see if one might be dual alt.

In the meantime, here is an alternator upgrade thread on here.

It's a 350, I've been looking around and I've found a bunch of serpentine kits that can mount dual alts, but they're freakin expensive!

Re: Dual alternator setups?

It doesn't have to be expensive....I use factory 305, 350 or even 4.3 brackets and they will all accept my CNC water jet cut aluminum brackets so long as it has a smog pump provision.

Re: Dual alternator setups?

Give Alan Grove Components a call. All they do is accessory brackets.

Re: Dual alternator setups?

How much current do you need?
Power master makes a 160 amper I believe. Your shedding valuable hp's by having an extra alt
