newbie
I really love these trucks, especially the later ones with the honeycomb grills. I am 19 years old and have quite abit of tools (my dad's). I really want to get a 72 truck. The ones i see in illinois have rust in the rockers, cab corners, floor supports, and floorboards. Is this common. I don't know anything about bodywork, and my dad knows more than a little about motors. There are a few guys around that do body work who i could talk to. I need some advice for buying a project truck. Have most of you replaced the areas i mentioned? Should i look somewhere else for a truck. I would really like a shortbed 2 or 4 wheel drive, or longbed 4 wheel drive. I have been looking at patch panels and noticed that alot of the parts are dirt cheap...does this mean that they are low quality? Where are some good places to get parts of anykind. please help, any advice appreciated.

Is it rare to come across a 67-72 project truck with a decent body?

It depends on your location, but yes those areas you mentioned are common for rust. It takes some looking to find a good truck to start with, but the repair parts are easily obtainable. Most of the vendors here sell quality replacement parts that fit well. Welcome to the board!!

Down here, I buy a truck or two per year that doesn't need ANY rust repair. I won't buy a truck that needs more than rockers done to it. There's plenty of others out there if you look.
It's a regional thing. Some guys on this board, from the rust belt, say they have never even seen a 67-72 truck in a junkyard. Here, there are minimum 10 per yard, sometimes row after row of them.

Welcome from Wisconsin.
I would look south for an all original truck. Or look for one that's already done, bodywork's expensive!! That's what I did. Good luck.

Welcome to the board from MN!
The rust spots you mentioned are pretty common. But, for the most part, you get what you pay for - you can find a cheap truck that needs much work, or spend more and have a solid truck for a starting point. In the long run, it's probably cheaper to spend more for a rust free truck, if you can find/afford one. Good luck! BTW - here's what mine looked like before going under the knife (a MN special!)
