I struggled with that on my '63 about 8 years ago (replacing a mangled column as a result of the previous owner). After a couple of years, I ended up just going with a paintable steel Ididit automatic column (running a 4L80E) that is splined for the original steering wheel. The virtual plug-and-play, bolt-in convenience more than made up for the extra cost.
