run engine for a few before oil change?
So I put a new Edelbrock intake on this weekend and the rebuilt carb should be here tomorrow. I was real careful keeping the crud out of the valley and am going to change the oil and filter. Should I run the engine for a few minutes to filter out anything that might have gotten past me or just change it right away?

Re: run engine for a few before oil change?
Change it before and after. When it's cold I'd wager the bypass valve will open and stuff will NOT go through the filter, so you'd just be pumping garbage around through the bearings.
Then again, there's nothing about changing an intake that should cause hard materials (ie: metal) to fall into the engine, so other than clogging up an oil path or something I doubt you can cause a lot of damage. If coolant spilled in, definitely drain it first. Water is heavier than oil, will sink to the bottom of the pan, and is a terrible lubricant, so you don't want your oil pump picking that up and sending it through the bearings and so on.

Re: run engine for a few before oil change?
If it was me I'd change the oil and filter without running and let it drain a little longer

Re: run engine for a few before oil change?
Great responses thanks! I seem to change the oil just for fun anyway so I'll let it drain long and change it next time I feel like it. Very little crud got past me and no coolant thanks to all the tips on this board. This was the only question I had to ask on the whole job!

Definatly change it first. Usually a little antifreeze makes it threw no matter how careful you are. On the bright side a little coolant in the oil wont hurt it. A table spoon or two will vent off. The big thing is not having a milk shake in the oil.

Re: run engine for a few before oil change?
Drain and change before running keeping the old filter in. I put cheap light stuff back in,then run to operating temp, drain, change filter, and put the good oil in.
